  • 500 roll over on spin down... Blade damage ok?

    Guys,

Bloody thing. Landed it just now, got her down nice and gentle. Moved stick to low position, blades spinning down... Almost stopped; then she just bloody tipped over for no reason!!!

No real damage at all except here where the blade root contacted the blade grip on one blade.

I've flown it like this (carried on after) and it seemed fine but what are all your comments?

    Hey.

    Flybarless or flybarred?

First thing that springs to mind is the main blades are too loose in the blade grips, so as the rotor rpm slows down the swing in the grips and unbalance the head. This causes the model to shake and in turn roll over, which will be made worse if the model is flybarless.

I would be reluctant to use that blade again with the damage being that close to the root of the blade. It may be weakened now.
Am I right in believing you have a FBL system? Because I've seen a few helis topple while they're spooling down and theyve all been align FBL units.

I have actually seen the same thing happen when the blades were too tight! It was a 700 with BeastX rev3.

Make sure you have a good 4-5 degrees of negative pitch at bottom stick. This will plant the Heli to the floor on spin down and shorten your wind down time.

I'd put a bit of medium-thick ca glue on and keep on using them - just my opinion. Also if you haven't checked, see if your mainshaft is bent.

I'll prob get stoned for saying this but that blade doesn't look too bad to me judging from the pic. 'Looks like mainly just the gelcoat and not a critical structural issue, but as I say that's just from what I can see in the pic. I have had a few blades with little chips in the same place where they contacted the grips from transporting them.

But having said that, blades for the 500 are not too expensive (unless they're Edge FBL or something).

If you're going to throw them out send them to me and I'll test them :-)

I wasnt planning on throwing them out :P I tend to agree with Stanley, just looks like damaged gelcoat to me - Was going to "fill" with some CA at worst; Just leave it alone at best.

However I'm new to the hobby and I just wanted to check that nobody would pipe up saying "This happened to mine and I carried on flying and the blade shattered into a million pieces when I was inverted at 36,000Ft afterwards!"

Ive meticulously checked everything over, all the edges of all the blades and can see no further damage at all.

IF the main shaft is bent then I'll eat my own foot. I cannot stress how slow the blades were going when it toppled. I'd say probably 300 rpm tops as a wild guess; You could see the blades spinning they were going that slow (if that makes sense, you could follow each one - it wasnt just a blur!)

It is an align 3gx unit, but im actually tempted to say that wasnt the cause of the topple. The landing area I use isnt that even, and is fairly mossy. I think what may have happened is that I landed it, and when I moved the stick to the low position, the negative pitch slowly compacted the moss in a low spot under one skid which made it topple.

And trillian, blades arent that expensive, but when you look at it in the light of 3 sets of blades for 7 flights, thats pretty expensive! (I did 3 flights, crashed it on my fourth like an idiot, then did 3 more today)

I'm not sure if you are using the 3g blades or the normal 425Ds, but if you want it I've got a spare 425D if thats what you have.

Also the radix 430 blades are very good although they are expensive at £50. They survived 3 tipovers when I had a beastx trex 500.

If you get the standard flybarred ones and you break one I've got a spare one of those too .

Im using the 425D 3g blades... Thanks for the offer Stanley, very kind of you!

Can you link the Radix 430 blades? I don't know anything about blades. I just use what it came with!
