On ours you need to be checked by the trainer and passed capable of at least doing the basics. if you are a newb you can't fly until checked and a group of newbs on there own is just an accident waiting to happen I guess.

Sorry if it seems harsh but it's only common sense really that someone who is capable checks you first, gotta be better than picking up 5 corpse's

by rights you should have your "a" certificate and bmfa insurance before you fly on your own. its just common sense that you fly with someone "capable" until you are though

No rules as such at our club.
Just common sense, and there are so many retired fliers that if its nice weather its easy to find someone up there to help.
Heard a few stories about "expert" plank fliers taking helis up to the field on their own and destroying them unassisted...

Extremely lucky to belong to club with common sense as its rule book.

They ask to watch you fly before you join, then as long as you have your insurance you can do pretty much as you please as long as you employ the club rule book.

I'm not actually sure if anyone at my club HAS an A cert let alone B certs! I'm sure some of them do as they often do displays at shows with the ww2 combat planes but most of those guys aren't regular club fliers.

Well at the Club I fly at if you say you can fly and don't have the 'A' and even if you do have the 'A' you still have to prove to me you can fly around safely with a plane. (I am membership sec so its down to me most of the time)

I hate being told by people they can fly and then watch some of the stuff they do. Even those with 'B's I can stand there and cringe....

Helicopters just show you can start it safely and not do stupid things i'm gonna be happy. We don't require some one to be on buddy leads etc with helicopters as we have no-one who is dedicated for that.

Follow the Club rules and I am happy....

Although we have Dave who will give a helicopter the once over and set them up for people.

At my club. for planks your with an instructor till you either pass the A cert or you can produce one.

With Helis your stuck in the corner in the hovering patch till you pass your A, then you can move to the main flight line but you have to then fly it like a plane(meaning circuits).
                  All the best

Booo! Hissss! I used to be in a club that did that. They then banned us even from the flight line and insisted upon us flying in a corner. Left and joined a real club.

But you are flying it like a plane, when the planes are all prop hanging and bouncing on their tails.

In our club they had that rule about flying circuits with the planks on the patch, but its fallen apart a bit since the three keenest plankers just prop hang all over the patch for ages.
But our club is not so crowded that there are not plenty of breaks to fly the heli on the patch, plus there is usually enough space (but not in all wind directions) to have another heli flight line, or even two. Easy enough to get through best part of a gallon in an afternoon...

I know what you mean about prop hangers.

and to be totally honest in all my messing about on the main flight line noone has ever said anything to me while flying a chopper, infact the first comment I recieved was this weekend was trying to prop hang a hype over the field about 60-100 foot up cos im new too it. the reason for the moan was 3 of the club members all wanted to chase each other up and down the field and there being another plane in the way was an inconvenience. I have to say the other 2 were ok, it was just the 1 bloke, someone else told me he heard and he would have gone for the blokes tailplane with the prop.

A thought for the next time

What is it with some clubs and planks and circuits?
Do planks only farking turn left or something?
How farqing BORING is that, flying the same circuit you've been flying since 1957
People running these sorts of clubs ought to take up control line flying

We have a you can't fly on your own unless you have an 'A' rule at our club, but you can fly supervised ( provided somebody is there who has an 'A' or above ) Total newbeis are buddied to the club ' Instructor ', those who have a basic competence can go off into a bit of the feild and hop about till there hearts content. It works well.
-I don't crash, I just land with enthusiasm.

A couple of 600n's with stuff on them that makes them fly..
A 550 fbl with even more stuff on it to make it fly
And a Mars 470 which needs stuff putting on it to make it fly

                              And a DX8 too
