  • filling a crater with spent magnum

Today as there were a few up at our field and the mower was handy I mowed a patch further up the track and flew the back side of the cars opposite side to the planks. Nice to have so much room that this is possible.
So I was flying over a bit of a valley, allowing about 30 -40 ft of extra altitude beneath normal ground level (nice especially for someone who used to slope soar).
Anyway there is also a little old quarry up there, about 4-5 yards across - like a bomb crater. so at the end of the day, when the exhaust smoke tends to build up on the ground I spent some time hovering upside down inside this crater.
I filled it to the brim with magnum exhaust until the heli was getting a bit difficult to see.
funny thing was because it was so still and it was about 5.30 pm with the dew starting to form (field is at about 1000 ft ASL so it gets chilly early) I refueled and flew again and a lot of the smoke as still sitting in there!

Anyhow apart form that bit of fun, I got a tail down skids out pie dish to be recogniseable, and managed to get round a few backwards circles.
I'm working on side on tick tock in forward flight but it keeps stopping and going backwards. I guess it needs subtle elevator in with the aileron to keep it moving forewards.
Odd thing is the pie dish and backwards flight seem easier for real than on phoenix. I'm sure the tail is letting go a bit early in phoenix (on the raptor 3D).

I find exactly the same with the pie dish, every time i stick it in on the sim i either fall out the sky or after 1 circle the tail whips out, at the field its rock solid until i bottle it (4 circles lol) i start my pie dish quiet violent by hovering then banging back elevator and right aileron so i'm virtually vertical at the start as apposed to entering it backwards, as for backwards flight i can manage a few circles but i find the sim easier as i tend to start shaking at the field to the point where the tx could get thrown out my hands lol. Dew on the feilds at 5.30! bloody winter is rushing in far to quick.

I enter my pie dish from fast sideways flight.
I've been trying to fly about sideways a lot. sideways loops are a laugh, can't get 'em straight nose in which is also the shakey section of my pie dish - but once you get it going round right its easy enough when its calm as few corrections are required.

put the tail rotor slightly high rather than horizontal and it will keep going forwards, drop the tail below horizontal and it will go backwards

Would that be the same for roll's lol my rolls from forward flight SUCK! people always say loops and rolls as if they 2 go together like cheese on toast but i've gotta say for me any way backwards flight tick tocks pie dish ect are easier than rolls! i think its thumb interaction as in i cant bang in aileron without moving the elevator up slightly so i end up rolling towards the deck big time. Should u start a roll perfectly flat in forward motion?

I suffer from a fixed wing hangover and for a long time I couldn't resist stabbing a little bit of down elev in as the heli rolled inverted. so my rolls tended to go from FFF to stopped as they completed.
Get the heli going fast, downwind makes it look better, apply aileron with no elevator, and rever the collective as it passes through inverted, zero collective on knife edge. You must do it without any elevator, and without any rudder (which is the difficult bit).
