I had one of those when I was a kid.
Used to pick up little plastic men with a hook from a dinghy.
Hours of fun and you couldn't crash it either.

I can't remember when I started, but before the boys were born, so around 2000 I guess:

Aerohawk from Ebay, via China, market price was £150 back then! Couldn't hover without getting into a pendulum, so shelved it for a,
Hirobo Lama Sky Robo, the first contra available at a whacking £250, but it taught me the right responses, so went back to the AH and now I could fly it, fixed the tail rotor problems and sold it. Still have the Lama SR.
Bought a Hummingbird cheap and got on with it really well, had the use of an indoor 5-a-side pitch to practice on every week, so could practice extreme hovering, pirouettes and circuits with no wind. Used a 3 cell lipo and got 15 min flights, hard to break and easy to fix. I've got loads of these now, most are for spares, but still flies really well! I will load some movies when I can!
Hummingbird 3D Pro x(4), Flies nicely, converted 1 to belt drive, its like a mini 'Rex now, brill round the garden!
Trex 450x, Now we're going upmarket, loved it and flew it everyday, learned a lot about forward flight from that. Still have it with lots of microheli upgrades.
Trex 450XL from Boggy/Fatmantom, got it flying, sold it to Cambs-Flyer then bought A Trex 450SEV2, no need to say anymore! Nitro wasn't really convenient but bought A Raptor 30 cheap from here. I fly this most of the time now, cos eyesight is failing again!
Walkera 43, very good indoor fun, a true sub-micro that is flyable, but not a contra!
Protos 500, bought new kit cheapish, but can't afford to kit it out yet.
Raptor 90 airframe, Webra 1.50 Gasser, engine just squeezes in, bit of a winter project, but again can't afford electric kit. This is the appeal of much cheaper fuel and longer flight times!

Sims: FMS to start, XTR was good, but Phoenix is the best.

I think thats the lot so far! The most improvements I've had in my flying are down to the Trex and Raptor!
