  • Which solder

Hi. I was just going to get some solder of eBay. Then I realised how many different types there is I want it for bullets and extending servo wires.
    What type will be ok?
    Thanks.

It's called eutectic or 60/40. Don't buy lead free.

The trouble with lead free silver solder is the whetting and melting point. With a standard soldering iron 50W say it's a struggle to get everything hot enough for the solder to whet the cable well.

A standard silver lead free melts at around 300 degrees where 60/40 goes at between 180 to 240. Getting the wire hotter for longer can cause premature work hardening and dry joints.

But if it works for you then stick with it, I had loads of problems so it's 60/40 for me.

I hated soldering even with my 100w soldering gun but as soon as I switched to 60/40 flux core it became a dream to solder, also I find thinner solder easier to work with, anything under 1.0mm is good.

a 45w soldering iron is more than enough for our needs.

The more power in your iron/gun the better as it makes for a quick job and less heat transfer down the wires as stated already, especially when soldering 8awg and 10awg wires.

Get the 60/40 tin/lead solder for doing joints from scratch and silver solder for repairing factory joints. mixing the two isn't good. Make sure you cut any pretinned ends off of your cables and retin them with 60/40.

choice is yours mate but higher wattage irons tend to burn the plastic before you have a chance to solder yes it melts the solder quick but less working time. esp when working with connectors

                          I solder all day long.
Lead free is a PITA, really hard to use.
Stick woth 60/40 lead / tin with 5 cores of flux, and a hot iron.

This looks to be a pretty good deal and is good quality solder. I have used multicore (brand name not type of solder) for years and always found it to be excellent. (compare the price of this 350g against 500g multicore reels which go for upto £50)
