  • B Test Top hat & Bow tie

Today & yesterday i decided to have a crack at practicing for the B test. I got the book online (can't find mine) & had a look & it said to do a top hat & a bow tie as the hovering moves. Well i've been doing them BUT it doesn't say if they are to be tail in or side on??? so being as they look like F3C moves i decided they should be side on & that's how i do them. Now if i do them tail in then they will be much easier but i'm finding doing them side on is more beneficial. Also when doing the bow tie do you start at the centre then move 45deg down towards an eye level hover at the tip of one side?.

Top hat is side on so the model flies either left to right or right to left out in front of you.

    The bow-tie is tail in.

The top hat is done side on into the prevailing wind the Bow tie is tail in.

Just had to read your text again. the Bow tie is done horizontally not Vertically as I think your meaning.
so the heli stays at the same height throughout the maneuver.

There is no mention of wind direction in the A or B test Tony .

Doh! ok you got me there Richard LOL But....

"The manoeuvre may be flown either from left to right or from right to left and the direction is decided by the Examiner."

              I say into wind

There is no requirement for the fixed positioning of manoeuvres relative to the wind direction in the Helicopter ‘B’ certificate and you will find no reference to the wind in the text of either the test or this Standards Document.

This makes it absolutely ESSENTIAL that you discuss this with the candidate at length so that you are both aware of exactly how you want the manoeuvres to be presented and what limitations will be accepted if the wind direction is not favourable.

It could be down to the examiner but I thought there was something about asking the pilot in which direction they were going to fly and expect the first take off leg to be into wind.

Ive not done a lead on a B as yet ive only done second string, so ill definately be rereading the literature prior to it coming up.

looks like I need to do a little homework

I just realised in reading through that again that I have been doing the bow tie wrong, Doh! Not vertical but not in the same sequence. I think the way they want it done is easier than I have been practising though it's kinda all the same stuff regardless of the order. I just find it very difficult in general to hover accurately over a marker!

The shape of the bow tie is different to how i done it. I thought of it to be 2 side ways triangles so i was making it very different. Anyhow i need to work on doing the top hat in both directions after looking at that document as i'm most comfortable doing it nose to the left & it would be sods law i'd have to do it the other way.
