  • Bmfa B test

I have recently passed my B test(after struggling to find a heli examiner!)which i did find trickier than i first thought(the side on hovering).
What i did find surprising was when talking to the heli examiner he mentioned that there is a guy at his club who can fly 3D stuff really well BUT he can`t pass his B because he can`t hover nose in for 20sec`s!!
Is it me or do/would most people conquer most hovering orientations before trying the 3D stuff?

No they dont , in fact to me the younger ther are the less likely they are to bother with the basics.
you can blame the sim / playstation culture for this .
IMO good they might be , but masters ,..... nope.

ps well done you the "B" is some achievment .

    Merry Christmas xxx Rachel

+1 on Rach, there are a few pilots who fly 3D but can't do basic upright or inverted stuff. I see people weeks into flying trying to do piro flips...

Congrats on passing the B test!!

Miss basics out at your peril. It will catch up with you the better you think you get. Fact.

The more time I spend doing my version of flippety floppety stuff the more time I have to spend on proper flying. The amount of times I have gone into the circuit upright and put in right rudder in a left hand circuit. Doh!

This is one of the prime points of the B test - you have to be able to do all the manoeuvres in both directions as the examiner can stipulate (if the want to) left to right or right to left etc. The point being that you have to practice it both ways and should (in theory) overcome any natural handidness.

I can`t do any 3D stuff but for general flying around i find this quote to be absolutely spot on!

If there's a good test of orientation and a demonstration of non-handidness, then I think it's these 12 manoeuvres (and no, I can't do them all):

Start from stationary hover 2m up, upright, tail in, 10m in front of yourself. Now do 10 second hovers around the clock face (i.e. 12, 1, 2, 3, 4 etc) on the spot without drifting or rising/falling turning right rudder.

Now do the same turning left rudder.

                    Easy so far?

Now do those two moves 15m over on your right hand side.

Then 15m over on your left hand side.

                    A bit harder?

                    (That's 6 so far I think.)

Then do the whole lot again inverted, that's 12.

                    Getting tough now I think?

I think any pilot who can do all that with stability and discipline is pretty good in my book, be they a 3D God or generic club flyer. It demonstrates exceptional awareness and control.

i must admit i am like that am only 19 and instead of doing the basics like lazy figure of 8's i like to do under and overs and practice my inverted flight rather than do all the basics i find it rather boring but i have only being doing it 4 month so had abit of time to pick up the basics

It's an expensive way to learn but as long as you enjoy it fair enough, just keep safe.

Congrats on your "B", nice Attachement.
The basic hovering skills are very important later on, you could find your self in an awkward Position coming out of a move and if your not happy with all the position's then your likely to crash!

I can't imagine doing any 3D (even stationary flips and half piro flips - I can't do much more ) without good grasp of all orientations. It must seriously cripple the person, except if you are talking about that tail in flips with 10 seconds pauses in-between type of 3D.
