  • scorpion motor oiling

my first scorpion motor is in the post on its way to me now (thanks Heli), so just a quicky. how often do you oil your motors (every 6 flights as per the instructions?) and what do you use. does it have to be heli motor bearing specific oil, or will somthing like three in one do the trick?

You need some of this with a single drop on both bearings every 8 or 10 flights.

Never had any trouble here using the same method.

That's what I use too but no where near that regular and never had any bearing issues what so ever

If you do then you can get top notch bearings for a few £ anyway

I oil mine every 3-5 flights sometimes at funflys it will go a bit longer like every 6-10 flights. Cheap insurance and easy to do, I gotta give my logo some maintenance to check over it .

All bearings with shields will be packed with grease. When you start to use oil you will probably thin the grease and it will get flung out of the bearing. So once you start oiling you will have to ensure you continue to do so.

I have no experience with how long the bearings should last but I have not oiled the bearings on my 4020-1100 motor and it is still good after many flights.

You haven't missed anything. I know a few others who don't bother oiling their Scorpion motors either with no ill effects.

With the Scorpion oil applicator (needle nozzle) you just put it through the motor holes and oil the rear bearing with a few drops and then oil the front one just under the pinion with a few drops.

A torch helps with the rear bearing .

Scorpion themselves recommend oiling as they make the motors I guess they have some kind of knowledge on the matter. These are the highest RPM bearings in our helis, grease doesn't do so well at such a high rpm (not to say it can't).

The way a shielded bearing works is the grease is designed to seep slightly as the shields are not seals. This grease then solidifies and stops dust and dirt from entering. If you wash this grease away with oil then that protective layer is lost. The grease left inside will again seep to make the seal. This will continue until you have washed all the grease out at which time the bearing will probably fail. If the grease seal is working and the oil doesn't get passed it then oiling is a waste of time.
