  • Help please, First Electric

    Firstly Hello to all.

I've been flying Nitro for fun on and off for about 15 years, but for the first time I'm seriously thinking of getting an electric heli, not to replace the Nitro's I still love the long flights and sound etc etc. But there is a definite appeal to charging up and just putting the heli and TX in the car and that’s it.

So here's the problem/question I've been trying to answer all week searching on the web but have finally given up and landed here.

I currently fly and enjoy my flybarless Trex700 the most, so naturally first stop was a Trex700 electric, but I don't really want to spend all that when I have a Nitro one and also it only just fits in the car etc etc. So I'm thinking a little smaller for convenience/battery cost. But I’m going round in circles because in my mind if I get a smaller one, it'll be cheaper and I can quickly pop it in the car for a quick fix, but will it be a lot less stable and get blown around and more than by beloved 700N and it'll end up an expensive mistake which just ends up an ornament.

To ask the question a different way can anyone recommend an electric heli that’s big enough to satisfy my larger heli preference (which is really just based on stability rather than physical size) and has a more cost effective power pack requirement than some of the big boys.

Hope this makes sense any recommendations gratefully received.

    Thank you.

TRex 500e Flybarless 3GX super combo.
Small enough to transport, big enough to be stable, cheap enough on the pocket.
Lovely heli, you will not be disappointed.
Bet there will be loads of mentions for this to follow.
Turnigy 3000mAh batteries from Hobby King and off you go.
Did my 'A' cert with the 500 and doing 'B' with it.

The thing about stability in wind is that it's pretty much a direct relationship to the mass of the heli. (the other
factors being the aerodynamics of the shape and size of its profile etc. but it pretty much comes down
to weight in terms of being affected by wind).

A .90 size heli will generally weigh somewhere around 5 kilos give or take a bit. A 50 size will be 3.5 to 3.9 ish.
So as you go down the size range you'll see a fairly consistent increase in how much it gets affected by wind.

If you might consider going 700 size electric eventually than one thing to consider is that if you were
to get into an electric heli that uses the 6s 5000mah packs you could double up those same packs
for use in a 700 size machine.

For shear economy and versatility the Trex 500 is hard to beat but it's not going to sit in the air rock-steady
like the 700 if it's windy, however, in calmer conditions it can pretty much do anything you want.

There's really no substitute for the way the bigger helis fly IMHO. I love my .90 nitros but I get a huge
amount of mileage out of the 500 and I like the contrast when flying one then the other.

Fantastic Heli but higher up the budget range with 5000mAh batteries.

500 is the most convenient size, but as Chris has said; I would also go for the 550.

              Depends on budget though.

My 500efl pro goes everywhere with me in the car.
Always try to have couple charged packs with me, so when out for "collecting customers parts " I can just stop at the club for a quick fix.

Get the 500 if you want convenience , you will not regret it.

                    Hi,

Just thought I'd let you know I took the advice and bought a Trex 500E Pro super combo yesterday. I went for the Flybar in the end personal choice I still like them ! I'm going to use two spectrum satelites off of the GP 900.

Flight pack wise I picked up two Thunder Power 2700 6S 65C's they were recommended, I got home and realised my Charger I have is only good up to 4S so I have ordered a Thunder power TP 610C Charger to suite.

So you've cost me best part of a grand but hey you can't take it with you !

Thanks again for the advice !
