  • General heli maintenance, any positives from oiling/greasing gears?

currently going through my helis with a general check of links/bolts etc,my question is - is there anyneed to grease or oil front and back tail drive gears also mainshaft? pros and cons please

Once a week, I clean main and tail shafts with kitchen towel, then spray with WD40, exercise controls a bit, and finally wipe off excess and use WD40 generally all over the place to clean, especially at this time of year as it is a moisture repellent.

Also all-over bolt tightness check and visual inspection.

No need to lubricate gears as plastic/nylon/delrin gears are self-lubricating. Just metal-to-metal bits really. Some helis (like my Xcells) have all metal tail gear box gears, so they have to be periodically packed with grease. Most helis nowadays use plastic ones so not an issue.

Whole process takes about 15 minutes per heli. Do it every week on a Sunday evening after the weekend's flying.

I grease the gears but that's cos I'm electric only and don't have the one benefit from all that oily mess which is that everything gets nicely lubed constantly

Check blades to make sure they ok and a general look over, links etc not about to fall off and no nuts and bolts about to drop off either.

I got different oils and sprays and lubes etc that I use. The opti cleaning kit, some triflow stuff and good ol wd40, oh and more recently brake cleaner which is friggin awesome stuff!

Allways worth checking all your wires too incase they have been rubbing on anything and are about to short on your frames
Servo cases too, a couple of times ive pulled a servo out only to find the mounting tab had broke and gone un noticed, especially on a nitro.

I use a light coating of silicone grease, non-corrosive, rubber and plastic friendly, on main shaft and main and umbrella gears.
