Before you take off the LED should be solid.
It doesn't initialise properly unless it is HH mode.
LED off is rate mode, on is HH, flashing is failed to initialise - or if it was previously solid, then it means it received some rudder stick input.
So - hmm - it kind of sounds like you must be normally flying in HH mode - as if you haven't fired it up in HH mode it would fail to initialise, not work, and you would crash!
