  • how good is a 401 like phoenix?

i just wanted to know how good the hold is on a 401 is it like the sim it never moves? or is that unrealistic,im using a csm hlg 200 and a hitec 425bb ithink its like .22 sec,now i think my gyro is holding well it has a bit of a tail wag but i went from a normal cheap gyro to this and now i can fly 8s etc but im wondering if the 401 just holds it still so this would help me progress better as i dont have that mutch faith in the tail?
i know you all say its a realy good gyro but i mean in real terms whats it like if ya in hover for 5 mins will it just sit there?
mite seem like a strange question thanks for any replys

also in phoenix is there a way to replicate transitional lift,is that right? i fly in a windy spot and at hover im contantly changing the throttle/pitch like mad,is there a way to replicate that in the sim?

Any heading hold gyro worth it salt should (you guessed it) hold its heading, even in a reasonable breeze.

Just by accident today, I discovered my 401/9254 on my 600E runs waaaay better in rate mode - for some reason I hav'nt figured out, when I do high speed passes, especially backward ones, my tail seems more locked in- I'am no 3d pro but it seems to me that when in hh mode, the tail is controlled more by the gyro than me- or have I got this completely tits up???????

When i had my airskipper 50 and i was running a 401 i let Duncan Osborne fly it and he done some awesome tail slides and backwards flying and the tail held spot on, i think the 401 is a great gyro but there is better coming out and i think futaba are being beaten down by cost and size and performance of there 401, but you could by a new 401 for £99 or pay and extra £30 and get a csm 720

            Hi Steve

So Duncan has flown your old 401 gyro... (now mine) - is that the kiss of death to my model? or will it bless it with incredible 3D capability

            Cheers - Rob

Na it held up very good and you know that tail slid that guy did at 3DM this year?? the one when he took it up high and came down fast, well thats pretty much when he did and it was solid

In rate mode he heli should weather ****. ie you can fly a circuit in rate mode without touching the rudder stick provided the forward speed is fast.

Backwarsds flight in rate mode should be difficult- once the tail gets a little bit out it should whip round and face forward.

So could it be that you have rate and HH the wrong way round?

                  timmy
The tail should be nailed in the hover pretty much like the sim.
Cheaper gyros can suffer some drift on warm up so it starts slowly rotating after a while. Switching off and back on again helps, it re-zeros in its warm state.

what would a slow tail servo cause?
is the jr 490 on par with the 401?

a slow servo will be hard to get the tail to hold well before it starts to wag.
The 401 has a delay pot and a gain pot (but usually you use a rx channel for the gain which overides the gain pot). with a slow servo you have to turn up the delay to get better performance.
With decent servos the delay is always set to zero on a 401.

I reckon the best way for you is to invest in a better servo and see how that goes before you upgrade the gyro. Though you can get good package deals on gyro and servo (such as 401/9254).

shud the 9254 work with my csm gyro ok?
well the hitec servo is slow isnt it,so maybe a servo will help as it is drifting a bit but from having a pg 01 and flying with that the csm i got on ebay has improved my flying masses
think il get the 401 and the servo

Please correct me if I'am wrong , in Rate mode the red light on the 401 is flashing and when Heading hold is enabled it's solid, reason is I got mine s/hand without manual and just plopped it on the 600- adjusted gain till the tail stopped wagging and just flew the model.

not strictly true 3dx, when its in rate mode, the light is off, if its flashing, its either been started in rate mode (Steady flash), or its in HH but its receiving an input (2 flashes and a pause).
