  • Motor Timing and Frequency - how critical?

Guys,I'm building a Raptor 90 SE Electric conversion and already have the Scorpion 5020-450 motor on the bench. The Scorpion website prescribes 5deg of timing and 8kHz timing. The closest that the ESC I'm looking at can get to these figures is 3.75deg or 7.5deg and 12kHz or 24kHz respectively. Clearly the 3.75deg and 12kHz are closest to the prescribed settings, but are there any problems that I should be aware of if I don't match these settings precisely in such a power-hungry application?Or should I just crack on and not worry about it?cheers,Si G

The other option is that I step away from the HobbyWing ESC (£105 from GC) and stumpt up the extra £95 to get the genuine Scorpion 130A HV ESC (£200). Can anyone offer a good news story on these? Do we have collective trust in CC ICE2 ESCs yet (£210)?

I would go 12khz and 3.75 degree and try it.my hobby wings have 8khz as an option 100amp lv and 120 hv

If the HobbyWing ESC works well then I'll save £95. Only downside I'm aware of (at my ability level) is that the soft start isn't very soft.

Are you running HW settings or turnigy?

Just looked for asids post on it but it seems to have vanished :/

If the PWM frequency is too low, this can mess up commutation (motor runs horribly, AIUI.)

If the PWM frequency is too high, it can make the ESC overheat (particularly with a high inductance motor) [I believe.]

So my guess is that the motor won't mind 12kHz instead of 8kHz - however, the ESC might.

WRT timing, I think 3.75 deg might give less power than the recommended 5 deg; and 7.5 deg more power, but more heat.

I would see if you can email someone at Scorpion and see what they say. I'll be interested to know how
you get on with this conversion as I am considering converting a Robbe Milli to electric.
