Having flown one of those when they first came in to this country I can say without fear of contradiction they are definitely NOT Fasst so most likely DSM (Do Shake Mightely). Reaching VNE is a test of nerves!

not sure about the 5 yrs but after 4400 hours the helicopter goes through an extensive overhaul and afterwards is considered a new helicopter(sounds very expensive) i know they have tobe checked after 12 yrs as well so that might relate to the 5 yrs
Not cheap to overhaul either : http://www.robinsonhelicopter.com/pr..._pricelist.pdf

The idea is that you are taking the gamble that a refurb will not cost "that much" and so you'll end up with an essentially new helicopter for less than the £170,000 or whatever that a new R22 costs.

Personally, I prefer being more than 1.1 seconds away from death for my entire flight. YMMV.

I wouldn't touch it. When i had my lesson in a Shwiezer the instructor said they used to use R22's until the school's owner's best mate was killed in one that malfunctioned. They got rid of them all (exept an R44) for the Schwiezer's & i've read they are one of the best beginner heli's (shwiezer not R22).

This thread reminded me of a friend, whose dad used to rent these out to training schools. Then one day an auto rotation landing went wrong:-

At least it looks like the guy survived with only a change of underware required, not sure i like the idea of a piston powered heli have been in a turbine heli couple of times and i wad not 100% relaxed in that.
