As titled, are they really necessary ? Had one on the ESC lead on my Align Trex, but took it off as it was in the way of me rerouting the wiring. Didn't notice any problems so took the one off my other 450 for the same reasons. I've been lead to believe they were essential if using 35 mhz radios, but not with 2.4 gear. Yes / No ?

Ferrite rings.
Trex 450 SEV2.
Trex 450 SEV2, hack, freeby, but getting expensive. Binned the bu**er !
Trex 550 V2. Adrenalin ( brown kind )

mCPX, better than a Phoenix anyday.
Several planks, gathering dust.
Brains and thumbs work okay, but not at the same time.

Regardless of which Tx system you employ, RF noise is generated by ESC, BEC and motor. This introduced noise can travel down the throttle line to your Rx and then onto flight control electronics. The ferrite ring helps filter out this noise. So, personally if an ESC comes with a ferrite ring I leave it on regardless.Steve

Ferrite rings reflect conducted noise back to the source they are particullary good at higher frequencies is they will remove the switching harmonics that are resident on the dc feeds that get generated by the esc and switching becs glow drivers ect it's really important to keep them and get the biggest mechanical distance possible between the rx and all noise sources to reduce the effects of radiated noiseWhen you are trying to recieve a rf signal that's a few tens of micro volts its really unhelpful to have a noise source that's many tens to hundreds of volts really closeSteveSteve...

I've been meaning to mention Ferrite beads for a while as I'm not sure that they are used in the right way. They are inductors and inductors show a higher impedance to higher frequencies than low ones. The relationship is 2(Pi)fL. or 6.3 X frequency X inductance. Just putting a higher impedance in series won't do anything unless there is a low impedance at the other, like a capacitor. This happened at a company I worked at when a mains interference inductor from Switzerland did not work. The designer was summoned over and eventually asked the MD where the capacitors where that were shown in the application note.
The point I don't understand is why the black and red wires are wound in the same direction. The surge current would be flowing in the opposite directions, unless they are referenced to some common earth, and would cancel one another and have no magnetic effect on the ferrite. I expect there is some subtle reason, but I've often wondered.Flasher 450 Sport. Assan GA250 with 520 tail servo, MKS DS450 cyclic.

lol CJ , I love your explinations on heli topics but this one went right over the old nogin. for those like me who are not mensa candidates , do you think the ferrite clamps that fastlads sell will help and if so do i position them at ESC or RX end of the heli....thxOriginally posted by cjcj1949 View PostI've been meaning to mention Ferrite beads for a while as I'm not sure that they are used in the right way. Winding both cores on to a ferrite has the effect of reflecting the hf edges back to the source there is indirectly caps in both the esc and rx therefore ecs noise remains in the esc and can't get into the rx and the same for the rx
Mainly it provides a good path for dc but has significant attunation in the tens to thousands of Mhz this also helps to remove some of the high order harmonics on the switching edges
Don't take them out even on 2.4 they help remove crap and the field open for unreliable rf links to cause their own problems .....Steve...

Yeah, well tht's easy for you to say.
