  • *PICS* Cracking attic find! *PICS*

Sifting through the junk in the attic yesterday to fill a skip, and came across a copy of a model heli magazine from Autumn/Winter 1985!! 22yrs old!!

It's got a review of the new Kalt Cyclone in there, with some guy flying (hovering it) on the beach in Norfolk. It also shows someone at Sandown show flying (hovering!) a Cyclone.

There are also some ads for GMP heli's, and a some horrible looking heli called a 'Competitor'. There is an ad in there for a magical device called a gyro too.

This mag is older than some of the members on here!

    Cheers - Rob.

I bet the bloke flying at Sandown is Bob Johnson.

After all, he is the God Father of RC helis!

I may have been flying at sandown 22 years ago, it would have been the last time before I packed it all in until this january.

Any ads in there for a Hirobo 808 that was the last heli I Flew (hovered) before packing it all in.
      All the best

          That's amazing.

Nigel Ashwood looks like the guy who got me started in 1998 in Norwich and ran Langley's where most of my gear came from.

Never did no his second name but it looks like him.

Yes, that's what the text says - he's the manager of Langleys. Was that the place up on Castle Hill direction just outside the Castle Mall precinct? I always remember seeing a model (working) V8 engine in there. Also bought my power kite gear there.

biggest and best changes Ive seen in the hobby

                      1. how good the gyro's are now. They used to be mechanical and whir up when you switched them on.

                      2. Transmitters. All our throttle curves(if thats what you wanted to call them) had to be setup mechanically through the links. and you had a switch on the set for flying inverted.

John Wallington (hovering at Sandown) was actually a very good pilot and one of the guys at Slough R/C back in the old days. Sold me my Cyclone which was bought after reading the review pictured

I learnt on one... well - I use the term loosely. Back in 1994, could just about hover it, then one day a tail ball-link gave way and it started pirouetting... Full tail wouldn't hold it straight. Eventually came in sideways in a huge crash on concrete peritrack at RAF Swanton Morley. I remember running back to pinch the fuel tube to stop the engine whilst the remains did a chicken dance. That saved the OS50H engine, so I fitted a round head on it, and flew it fixed wing after that. Cyclone remains relegated to attic, and went to the community dump about a year ago.

                              Cheers - Rob
