Since Horizon Hobby sorted the aileron pots out on my DX8 some time back it hasnt been a minutes trouble Ian.

Of course your gonna get the usual crowd dissing the set for various reasons but everyone at Stainburn who uses them are running trouble free now.

If I crash this weekend I will blame my radio though.

I am also very pleased with my DX8. I was flying my EasyStar the other day (for around the second or third time) and I had a loss of control several times. I immediately thought that it might be the DX8 but I replaced my ESC and this solved the problem. I think that the ventilation on the motor was not sufficient and so it was overheating and maybe drawing a little too much current which then causes a temporary (a second or so) of cutout causing the BEC output to also be cut.
It would have been very easy to have blamed the DX8.
I have seen the report that supposedly damns the DX8 but after much consideration I am confident that the report makes false conclusions and, if you really suspect DSMX is at fault then just use DSM2.

If you already own a lot of Spektrum receivers and BnF models then I can see the temptation and I'd probably say it is a reasonable way to spend your money.

If you don't then I'd steer well clear as there are better alternatives out there.

Asked the very same question some time back, and got advised against it.. Decided to bite the bullet though, and ordered one anyway. Decided to buy from a place where I knew would turn around a lot of these tx's to ensure I got the newer stock. Glad I did buy one, and have had no problems. Like yourself, I have tried the dx9, and prefer the feel and functions the dx8 offers. Personally I would not buy second hand to ensure you do not get one of the earlier ones.

No doubt there have been teething problems in the past, but would assume that these are gone.

Personally, I do feel that the with the reputation the dx8 had from the start, that a lot of 'unexplained' crashes were just blamed on the transmitter. I went through a spell with a 450 heli and a dx7 where I had a few unexplained crashes, and it ended up being a servo which would fail several minutes into a flight.. had I been holding a dx8 back then I'm sure I myself would have blamed the transmitter.

Not sure on the latest firmware.. though I did update mine to the latest one from their site.
Very happy with the DX8 now.. the feel of the tx and the telemetry features are great.

I have a DX8 and never had any problems with it. I routinely fly planes / helis to just a dot in the sky, and I fly FPV - zero problems. Also, when was the last time you saw a thread that said "DX8 crashed my plane". Grab yourself a bargain.

If you buy one second hand send it to Horizon for a service. Mine is frome the first batch, it has been back twice. Apart from having to endure the odd comment and people holding crucifixes up when I get it out the box everything is dandy.
