l've always just tighten them enough that they only "just about" move if you hold the heli side on

Depends.. If I'm going to shoot auto's I'll tighten em so they're pretty stiff. Other then that they're about right, But always a little stiffer

with regards to tail blades - Enough so that they hold they're own weight.

Main blades very tight, tail blades medium-light tightness.

Depends on the Heli, what Heli size is it

Tight enough to hold bades when heli is on its side so thay just move if you lightly move and stop, heli on its side a little tighter than that for autos imo.

Mains tight enough do if the heli is on its side they dont move. But if i shake the heli they will drop to about 45 degrees, tails i just do up and tend not to worry about but quite stiff

Loose blades can cause crashes. I have heard stories of A helicopter crashing in the air and the pilot blaming the helicopter when it really was the blade tightness. When the rotor is overloaded from too much collective and cyclic together then the blades can pivot in the blade grips. In the right situation (pulling back on elevator) the blades can chop the tail boom off in flight. This also happens on the ground when a beginner pilot lands too hard with loose blades. A lot of people think the blades bow down and get the tail boom, but what really happens is the blade pivots in the blade grip. When this happens and there is a some back elevator input then the blade can easily reach the tailboom. So what is the correct amount of tension the blades should have? There is an easy test, grab a blade grip with one hand and a skid with the other. Hold the helicopter on its side with the main blades stretched out and parallel with the ground. Now give it a bump. If either of the blades pivoted in the blade grip then you need to tighten the bolt for that blade.
I set my tail blades so that if i land hard for some reason and my tail fin bends slightly (this could cause the tail blades to touch the ground) they will give and not snap. So looser than your main blades but not so loose that they just collaps under their own weight when vertical
                  Hope that helps
