  • Which Sim Model To Practice With?

    Hello all,
Following my original post in the 'New Member' section and all your suggestions just over a week ago, I have purchased a Spektrum DX6i and a copy of Phoenix to get used to the new transmitter.
I've set the transmitter up using the settings in a You Tube video I found but I'm not sure if they are the best so any advice for tx settings would be appreciated.
I'm still unsure which heli to buy but think I would like something I could fly indoors or outside in the back garden on calmer days.
I've considered the Blade 120SR or maybe the Walkera V120D01/V120D02 but I'm open to other suggestions and opinions. I'm in no rush though and plan on getting in loads of practice with the sim and new transmitter first.
The main point of my post though is which model should I practice with in Phoenix to give me the best grounding. I've tried the Blade 120SR in the sim but for some reason it just keeps bouncing up and down so I'm struggling with that a bit. Not sure if it's a setting somewhere or something else.
What are people's thoughts for one model in the sim which would help me the most and be a reasonable match for the heli you think would suit my requirements.

Thanks very much (in advance) for all your help and suggestions.

    Andy

Start with something big. Dont worry at this stage trying to fly the smaller stuff like the 120SR, its too small on the screen and imo the flight characteristics of the micro models in Phoenix is rubbish.

I would start with the Easyfly 50 and once you have got the hang of that try some of the performance 50 or 90 sized models. Some good ones to try would be the JR Vibe 90, Synergy N9, Trex 700, Velocity 50 and the Trex 600, however any 50 or 90 size would be fine I just cant remember any more off the top of my head.

I linked to some other posts that detail how to set-up a DX6i in this thread

The TDR is very stable (Three D Rigid) but doesn't behave much like any model I've flown - The Trex-600 is very close to how my models fly.

Another thing to remember is, some of the scale models in Phoenix have the tail set to rate mode. Learning to fly helis in rate mode isn't a good idea IMO. So if you do ever try the scale models, switch them over to heading hold first.

The raptor 30 is a very good model to begin with. Flys like the real thing, and very docile.

                Most definitely a Trainer.
Been there and done that, but never stop learning.
Now too many Helis to mention?

Thanks for all the ideas - will try this out tonight and for the coming weeks/months.
Any thoughts anyone on which model I should buy when the time comes?

Tough question, i just bought a trex 550e v2 moving on from a raptor 30 v1. If your going nitro I say get a used raptor v1/v2 to start off with, great machine to learn on (as i did). Once your more confident move on from there.

Thats an extremely difficult question to answer without more info, such as do you have a flying site nearby? Any preference for nitro or electric (which opens up it's own debate over the relative merits of both) and possibly the biggest question is what budget do you have in mind, being mindful of the faact that you WILL need spares (blades, tail boom, main/feathering shafts are all typical crash replacements).

Re Phoenix, I found the default Trex 600 electic behaved most similar to my 450 SEV2 in real life (although the sim was slightly more twitchy due to me taming the 450 a bit). Avoid the scale models, have a play around with the larger models, they are much easier to see

Sorry, I hoped the info in my first post would have been enough but to reiterate....
I'm after a small electric heli suitable to fly indoors or in the back garden on calmer days.
My back garden is about 35' wide by about 130' long and the bottom half is completely open.
I was considering the Blade 120SR or maybe a Walkera V120D01 or V120D02 (not sure what the difference is).
I just wondered if there was a better/preferred option or an alternative people thought would be suitable but along similar lines.
If however, you feel these would be a bad choice for a first heli (following plenty of sim practice) could you please suggest an alternative with the reasons why.
Budget is about £125 tops for a suitable BNF heli.
Basically, I'm trying to avoid spending money on something which will then need replacing or upgrading within a matter of weeks/months because it's too basic or conversely, never gets used because it's too advanced.
I know I'm asking a lot and there are bound to be a number of different opinions but all suggestions will be gratefully received.

Don't get anything Walkera, Their crap the 120SR is a nice enough heli, but not good if flown outside. I would suggest the Blade mcpx is the way to go

you could do far worse than an MCPX...ticks all your boxes (including budget hopefully) and behaves in the most part just like a decent size/price heli (with the exception of full-on 3D)
