  • New Turnigy 6s 5000mah - Cell 5 reading 0 Volts?

Took delivery of a 6s 5000mah turnigy a little while ago and was having a few problems with it. Left it to one side for a bit and decided to use a multimeter to have a closer look at the problem.

Looks like Cell 5 (?) is reading Zero Volts.

I've pulled the packaging off to get at the tops of the cells to prod the multimeter around there and it's still showing zero volts for that cell (the one with the blueish wire if anyone is familiar with these lipos)

Any thoughts as to why it would read that low? Anyone think of a fix?

All the other cells are about 4.0 volts.

You sure it is not a faulty Balance lead? Thinking if it is reading nothing at all the cell is probably completely dead. Is it under warranty still?

Read up on the return policy, I think it has to be started the same day you receive the cell so don't delay!

Take a voltage reading from the plug - if other cells are reading 4v each then you should get 20v

If you get 24v then you know the cell is working and it's just a balance lead.

Lipos do go wrong and end up at 0V. It could be short or open circuit. You don't need to take it apart to check the volts as if the volts are wrong at the balance plug its faulty and can be returned.

Aye. I've had it for ages to be honest and knew the warranty was void since I didn't register it straight away. Not to worry! They're only cheap, just didn't know if it could be saved!

              I just had the same on 6s 5000 30c's

              Cost 13.80 to post back.

They did email me to say I could post to Germany but was already on it's way

It is possible to save it if you've had it for ages. It depends on why its failed. You can charge just the faulty cell, very slowly and keep a check on the volts. Charge it as a 1S 200mah at 100ma. Preferably outside and if you expect bad things to happen they usually don't. Once the cell gets to about 3.7V I'd let it rest and see if it keeps its charge. If the charger complains use a different program. If that doesn't work use an old 1.5V battery that will only give a few 100ma. You will need a meter of course. If all is well you can charge it up to the same volts as the other cells. It will probably not be that good, but it might be worth a try. The other thing to do is to convert your 6 cell pack to a 5 cell pack by bypassing the faulty cell. People have done this, but of course you could short out a cell and possibly cause a fire. I'll look for a post if you want, unless someone whose done it replies.
