  • Twister 3D Storm - what should I know

I'll start of by saying I know less than diddly squat about electric heli's. So I've got myself a storm (second hand) to get the rust out with 12 years since I last flew seriously and that was with .90 size stuff.
Are there any areas of the machine requiring special attention?
Are any of the metal upgrades worth it, I do intend to fling it about a bit?
    Servos / gyro upgrade?
    Head speed, pitch range etc?
Best batteries for some good oomph?
    All that sort of stuff
    All help gratefully appreciated.

IMO I would avoid the metal bling - better to put the money to one side for the next heli. You may find that switching the tail servo and gyro may be useful to you though.

The Twister Storm is almost identical to the Blade 400 so rather than repeat the same info I will give you a couple of links that you may find useful.

I have 2 ready to fly including the Tx and a 3rd I use for spares. They fly straight out of the box as per the enclosed manual. I have even set one up as per the manual on a Futaba 9C. Save your money from upgrades towards spares. IMH&HO. Happy Flying.
Been there and done that, but never stop learning.
Now too many Helis to mention?

It's ok for flinging about so long as you don't crash it. The servos are nylon so strip easily, but your crashes if any will probably be so big that any servo will be damaged. The standard battery is useless. Use Tipple 2300s from Giant Cod or similar and you can charge at 2C if you want. Keep an eye on any bearings held in plastic housings as they escape. I upgraded the tail to metal, actually using the Blade 400 upgrade and its now in my HK450, as the metal tail in the clone wore out. The boom to body join takes a bit of hammering, but the body is cheap and I'd advise buying one. The standard servo works ok in rate mode and you can use that until you want drift free heading hold. The cheapest upgrade gyro I've seen is the GT9 from phoenixtech, although the new Blade 450 gyro should be ok if their specs are to be believed. Do get a charger that tells you how much you are putting in to the lipo. Then don't go below 20% of capacity. Also keep lipos at 3.85 volts when not in use, especially if its hot.

Thats what I was thinking. Cant remember the last time I had a small crash. 99% of the time I would be in V throttle mode so pretty much destroy a heli if the brain fails.
Good to know I can flig it about from the box as that was my concern. Going to upgrade tail servo and gyro so will probably change tail end to metal at same time and leave the rest to see how it goes.

I don't think you need to upgrade to begin with. Not unless you want a heading hold gyro. Secondhand Futaba GY401s off this forum go for £50. No drfit at all. Even using the servo in rate mode it holds the tail a bit. If you want to do good 3D then you may be better off with a clone 450 as the tail body connection is more solid. My 3D experience is just on the sim and I've just got to the stage of being able to appreciate a trex quality head. I'm not sure about the out of the box setup and the instruction book has errors, but the standard carbon blades are good but expensive at over £30. Ones from Giant Cod at £10 are ok or fibreglass for £3. You'll need credit card shims in the blade holders for trex blades.
