  • Skookum 720 or mikado v-bar

    Hi all,

This autumn I intend to build a 'hirobo sa-315 lama' with an electric conversion
& a three bladed head & tail. My first thought was a v-bar but having seen some videos on you tube of the 'Skookum' self righting itself I am wondering if this is better?

So please all chip in with pros & cons, all help valued. Thank you.

what electric conversion are you going to use?
who's 3 blade head? and do i assume correctly you'll be using the quick uk 3 blade tail?
i've not flown the 720 or the v bar
but the old sk360 i've flown works well

Vbar users will tell you Vbar is the best
SK720 users will tell you SK720 is the best

Vbar has the biggest fan base, so on here you will generally only find people raving about Vbar

Ive tried both and ended up with 4 SK720's

SK720 is probably more future proof having a much faster processor and built in SD card for data logging

I use the self levelling as a bailout feature, you can set it to self level upright or inverted. My eyes are not what they used to be and If i become disorientated help is just a flick of a switch away.

how about no stabilisation, this is my home built 3 bladed head on a Twister 3D storm, i'm now developing one for a 600 size machine

‪Kanal von stevewot4‬‏ - YouTube this was the first test flight with no stabilisation, it has gone on to fly circuits with no probs

Thanks for that modelguard The self level part was my reasoning for the skookum aswell.
my eyes are also not what they used to be & that said i would not just buy it if that was its
Only benefit over the v-bar. I have never flown a three bladed head & need as much help
As I can get. I would rather spend more now than later after a crash & burn that may of

to fly the lama 3 blade head without electronics
use 3 std 550 main blades blanced together not the supplied mrb 3 blades
set the cyclics to a max 4 deg aileron/elevator
              run a lowish head speed
put some expo into the tx
              and fly

to learn how to fly the head i would get a shuttle and fit the 3 blade head onto it
              there's plenty on ebay

my mrb3 head is currently fitted to my shuttle awaiting to go back onto my lama
but other projects are taking the time up at the moment

The HC3 units from Captron are popular in europe with scale users. The sx unit also has bailout. I have used most units available and i would recommend you take a closer look at HC3

I have both units and fly both on a regular basis I think I'm one of the only ones as it goes personally I like the sk720 it flys every bit as good as the v- bar if not a bit better if I'm honest the tail is sold and it has the self level feature for both normal and inverted flight and now for centre stick too I've just started using the gov feature too so I will report more on this when I've had more flight time . However it is slightly more expensive than the fullsize v-bar ,the v-bar is a bit easier to setup and also flys like it's on rails and the gov feature is very good, either are a good purchase

Vibration analysis might be very usefull for you. Both units do this, the sk 720 records vibration data on the inbuilt Sd card and you can play this back on your PC alongside an animation of your flight so you can pinpoint problems. Vbar you would need a Bluetooth link (extra cost) and someone to read the vibes and somehow jot them down whilst you were flying.
