  • So how was your day?

Good? Lots of flying on this sunny, fine Saturday?

    Good.

Let me tell you about mine.

Took the T-Rex 500 and 12S T-Rex 600 out this morning for a bit of a thrash. 500 flew nicely, although my attempt at 3D wasn't. Then started with the 600. Oh dear...

About 2 minutes before the timer expired, the head speed went way down. OK, I thought, I'm flying it much harder than I usually do, perhaps I've just managed to drain the battery quicker than expected (and the pair of packs are from the 6S days so they aren't new). Wrong. One cell on one pack had failed and puffed and both packs were red hot. That's the end of those packs then.

So then I put my brand new pair of packs in. 2 minutes before the timer expired, the head speed was down. Oh no... but the packs were cool, the motor barely warm, the ESC only ambient temperature. Perhaps the harder flying had used more power than I expected. So I went home, and from then on things got worse.

First the pack with the puffed cell, I removed the puffed cell and found it was totally dead, I put a nail through it and it didn't even smoke let alone catch fire. Then while charging my only decent 6S pack for my 500, in my haste instead of plugging the main cables into the charger's cables, I plugged the main cables into each other. Huge flash, the connectors welded themselves together and the pack started to puff fast. I threw it outside. I had just killed a perfectly good 6S pack :-(

While waiting for my 600's remaining decent packs to charge, I decided to finish off repairing the plank (a ducted fan MiG-15). I got it all nicely back together, tested everything was working and by now I had a charged pack for the 600 too, so I decided to go fly the plank and the 600.

After a failed launch with the plank (it has this bungee launch system, it has basically 2 speeds, very fast and fall out the sky) I managed to get it in the air. It was actually flying very nicely. Then the motor just died completely. I had no control, either. No power. It was actually gliding very nicely, remaining wings level and maintaining airspeed in a steady but slow descent. I was actually quite surprised at its stability with zero power to either the motor or the servos. It would have been alright if it quit while going upwind, but it was going downwind and heading out towards the valley at considerable speed, so I kept trying the controls. Then it sprang back into life! I gave it full throttle and started turning it around so I could land, then the power suddenly failed halfway through the turn. Helplessly I watched as the bank tightened up and the nose went down, as it disappeared out of sight into the valley now with about 90 degrees of pitch down. When I reached the wreckage, it wasn't good, the nose had stuck a good couple of inches into the ground, the fuselage had crushed, both main spars on the wings were broken and the motor and fan had ripped off its mount and crushed the battery. A complete write off.

I was so frustrated I scrapped it there and then, breaking it into pieces small enough to fit in my backpack so I didn't have to do the "walk of shame" with the wreckage out of the field...

So at least I had the 600. Wrong. Seconds after taking off, the power went down on the 600 and it lost head speed so I quickly landed before it turned into a full blown auto. I checked the connections, everything good - so I thought I'd just get it into a low hover to see if I could diagnose the problem, with the Castle Cremations bursting-into-flames incidents sitting in my mind. The moment I applied power again it made a horrible graunching noise... so I shut down. Looking down on the motor, it appeared that the pinion had slipped down on its shaft, and the main gear had stripped. When I got it home I found the pinion hadn't moved at all, it had basically disintegrated about 2-3mm into the main gear - I don't know whether the main gear stripped first and the bad mesh under power then destroyed the pinion, or if the pinion started disintegrating and destroyed the main gear. I suspect the main gear went first because the teeth stripped on it are stripped the full height of the gear, but the pinion broke about 2-3mm into the main gear (so I would expect if the pinion went first it would have just stripped the bottom 3mm or so of the main gear).

So now with the remainder of the weekend being sunny, our national holiday approaching (July 5th), I have no helis to fly and no planks to fly. At least I didn't crash either of my helis.

          Alioth, i feel for you!

Mt day has been similar, although not to your extent. Having given up Helis, i had the plank out, been fine, even managed a prefect landing, however on the 3rd landing, it caught a gust of wind, and blew it straight to a goal post, whacj, main wing in 2 pieces!!! Still, bit of CA on that and she'll be back.
So i got the spitfire out, funny that died mid flight too, and that didnt glide too well!!! Took a bashed landing and broke the fuse. Still, i robbed it of the brushless setup and that has now gone into the super cub for the time being............................now it really does shift.
However, i thought it was calm enough for the ultra micro P51..........................nope it wasn't lol and that took a tumble and snapped the tail clear off.

Still, i had fun, saw the funny side of all the crashes, am alive and no limbs lost. Yes planks are a hell of alot easier to fly and to fix................but i do miss them.

Least we have each other on here to talk to as my wife isn't after telling her the good news and that we are going 'plane' shopping Sunday lol

If I don't reply, it's probably because I am lost in a Field somewhere!

usually i'm the one with all the issues, but today my repaired 500 flew nicely, and my N5 with its new tail servo also flew very well. Pretty pleased.

Had another servo die mid flight but on the positive side managed to get her down safely.... I guess you'd say could have been worse.

I tried some blade stop auto's but failed to finish them both times. I got the blades started again both times, but could not get the head speed up to complete the auto and had to release throttle hold.

I think I know what I need to do for next time. More height needed and pitch the nose down for a bit, I think.

They are nerve wracking, but it's not as bad as it sounds. I am doing them very high, so if the blades don't start to turn, I have plenty of time to take off the throttle hold.

Both times the headspeed built up quite quickly, but it just stayed at a speed that wouldn't have been high enough to cushion the landing. If I went even higher, I would be able to pitch the nose down a bit once the blades get going, which might help to get more speed into them. There was no wind today also, it might be easier on a windy day.

This is definitely something that is easier on the sim!

That's the proverbial day from hell Alioth! The consolation being from here
                      it can only get better

Today (Saturday) was not a flying day for me. I set out to get my Robbe Futura sorted as it had
developed a fuel issue since sitting up from last year. It would run then suddenly cut out.
I managed to get it going today by clearing out all the fuel lines and replacing the filter
                      and now it seems fine.

Then I spent a little time with a friend's heli that had a few nagging little issues, tracking,
gear mesh, some chewed teeth on the main gear etc. So got that all going.

So now it's out to the field Sunday with the Robbe and with a little luck the engine
                      will keep running!

Fantastic day. Flew my Blade 400 without training gear for two full packs, flew my Supercub for half an hour and since the evening was so still I flew my mSR outside in the garden for another half hour. This evening I have charged up 2 x 2200 mAh batteries for the Blade, a 1800mAh and two 1300mAh batts for the plank for a good days flying tomorrow (today now). Oh and loads of aerial video footage of my village from way on high using the plank...

...speaking of which: how do I upload a video from my computer? The forum options seem to only accept vids from Youtube and various other websites.
                        Never happy, merely less depressed.

I spent today getting the BeastX and the head geometry of my 90 redone ready for tomorrow, but because I have fiddled on trying to get SBUS to work along with normal PWM channels, there's no way on earth it will be flying tomorrow

Hm, I think I know why the 600 started with what seemed like a partial power loss before the disintegration of the pinion/main gear. Looking at the motor shaft in the cool light of day the day after the event, there are witness marks on the motor shaft from where the pinion has started to spin (despite using some of the purple metal adhesive). Unfortunately Scorpion don't machine a flat into the motor shafts for the grub screw (unlike the Align motor shafts). If the pinion began to slip on the shaft but with enough friction to still turn the head fast enough to sustain flight, I suspect the friction would have made the pinion get very hot, weakening the main gear, causing it to start to strip out and then probably the pinion disintegrated.

                              >> so how was your day

F3N comp, first freestyle round ends with inverted auto that flips around in ground effect. I noticed too late that a) I've never practised it with those blades and b) the wind has turned.
one blade broken, surprisingly little damage but epic fail nonetheless
