  • Screw Extractor

    Hi all,

    While trying to get the Engine mounts off my Redline engine, I've come across a damaged screw head, Gave up on it and got my dremel out...

    Now I have no screw head and I've tried drilling it out but no success!

    Soo.. I've looked into buying a screw extractor such as;

    Silverline 969752 Screw Extractor 6pce Set - Silverline Tools available at Toolbox

    Not sure what's best now really can anyone recommend anything? I'm not sure it will work very well due to the bolt being 3mm and very tough metal!

    Cheers
    Tom

    With that screw extractor set you first need to drill a hole in the middle of the broken screw.
    In your post you never said what size the broken screw is, anything less than 6mm the above system won't work well as the small one is 3-6mm so you need to drill a pilot hole for it to screw into of more than 3mm and less than 6mm.

    the best is like you've done, drimmel off the head dismantle the part and use mole grips or the like to bite onto the exposed rest of the bolt and unscrew it that way.
    Hope it helps
    Paul.

      The problem is the centre is hard as owt. The only time I've been successful with drilling out is to start with a small size drill say 2mm and a bit of oil as coolant. Start slow and it's better with coated drills. Next a 2.5 and then a 3.5. Go until the head just breals off. The dremel should have got it though. Did you remove the whole head. I don't think stud or screw extractors are going to help you much though

        Its 3mm bolt,

        Just decided to grab the engine mount with some clamps and Bash the engine (only the case - nothings bent!) against the table... slowly came off, SUCCESS!

        Cheers for your help, just saved me a fiver
