  • Question for the plank flyers please

Have bought myself a plank, which i CAN fly with my arthritis.

Now it came with DX4e which is fine but obviously the option to buy more planes is there.(as they are cheap compared to helis lol)
So which TX is the best long term option?

Is the DX6i the best, or go for the 7, or do i need more??? Is more better?

I will probably end up with a large plank with retracts etc but atm plan to stay electric as the kids hate the sound of nitros...............(no getting rid of the kids is not an option........yet)
    Just wondered what peeps thought
If I don't reply, it's probably because I am lost in a Field somewhere!

DX7 would be a better bet, just for it's ability to mix channels, and the extra channels for flaps, or twin aileron servos etc.
    Cheers,

All this can be done on the DX6i

Unless you need 7 channels the DX6i is fine for the job. I had a CAP 232 with 26cc petrol engine on the dx6i, just my flying ability made it hit the ground !!

        cheers si,

there is very little in the price between the 2, but didnt want to pay out the extra for something i'd never need.
As i have a fund from the sale of helis, thought it be wiser to start with the right TX for long term use.
Sure there is someone selling a DX7 on here !

          1 Throttle 2 Rudder 3 4 Ailerons 5 flaps 6 elevator 7 retracts.

Thats what ive got on a spitfire so if its reasonable size scale your going for I would plump as has been said for the dx7 it makes setting them up easy you just obviously need to pick your models with channels in mind.
          All the best

Just to be on the safe side the best choice would be the DX7, as some clubs will not allow transmitters with seperate battery cells to be used as is the case with the DX6i etc and insist in the battery being a rechargeable plug in type.

Stick with what you have for the time being, then when you need more channels, I'd go for a DSX9; no point in getting just one or two extra ones. DSX9mk2 is an excellent bit of kit, well liked and used by many guys in my club. Were I in the market to replace my DX7, it is what I'd be opting for.

i would give serious thoughts to going futaba 8fg (allows 14 channels) if you feel you will get into scale in a large-ish way at anypoint. i would suggest the spekky dx8 but i'm pretty sure i'm not certified mental yet!?!. a bog standard plane with retracts will swallow up atleast 5 of those channels (one servo per function). a bigger plane with 2 ail servos/2 elev servos/2 retract servos and a thro servo has just maxed out your TX. on the plus side not many people need more than 7 channels for general needs, it all depends on your future use.

i'd suggest 7 channels would be ample for the normal modeller but scale throws a diff light on things as some want hatches/lights, smoke (big petrols) etc etc.

                    cheers

agreed with above, planks, especially large ones and/or scale will eat up 7 servos in no time, i would go for atleast 9, or even better 14 from fhe 8fg. 4servo wing, 2 for the elevator, 1 for rudder 1 for throttle and thats 8 without any retracts.

thanks for the info, certainly lots of food for thought. One question is, some of the models I am looking at have the Spektrum receiver already in. My current SuperCub has, but can these be changed in the future? And as my skills improve and I expand my fleet, am i advised to keep away from the Spektrum based models if i go the route of the Futaba?
and yes DX8 is def out of the question! at the moment its early days, BUT if i buy a TX i would want it to be something that i don't later need to think about changing, as it'll be something i get comfortable with as my flying improves. Changing a TX is not something i like doing

If you want get a DX6i/DX7 for all the spektrum bind and fly stuff now most of that stuff is the cheap stuff foamys etc etc

But as soon as you hit larger models time for the Futaba 8FG no questions about that and they don't come with spektrum receivers or Look for models that do not Bind and fly to Spektrum then you can just put in a Futaba receiver.

I know people using all 12 channels with a 12FG on large scale models

my gliders hit 12 channels and they have no throttle!!!

Jets get there quick as well as I've discovered!

having read all the recent bad news about Spektrum, i am seriously now considering the futaba route. It seems everywhere i go somebody has issues with Spektrum TX's! not good if you ask me as i would rather have something that's safe and reliable than anything else.

if your planning to get into large-ish planes i'd personally buy an 8FG ASAP and punt the spekky gear. BNF really isn't the end of the world as you won't be buying large BNF airframes.

                              cheers
