  • Brushless motors about to leap in price.

The brushless motors that we use in our Helicopters and planes are about to go up in price by as much as 50% according to Scorpion Motors.

This is due to one element in the production of the rare earth magnets at they all use.

Rare earth magnets are made from a mix of Neodymium, Iron and Boron. The Neodymium element is the problem. China has 95-96% of all known world reserves of it, and they have announced export restrictions on it.

Raw Neodymium in the USA 1 year ago was $19 per pound. It is now $129 per pound!!

In the last 5 years, the price of raw Neodymium has increased by a factor of 30!

Scorpion motors took one of their motors as an example, and the magnets in it, of which there are 12, 5 years ago cost 50cents per magnet. The price now is $7.50 per magnet!!

If you are thinking of getting a new brushless motor, you had best get it soon to save some money!!

What is the power difference between brushed and brushless motors? I presume brushed motors cannot rotate as fast as well. Can a brushed motor provide enough lift for a heli? Pardon my ignorance.

                Cheers

Technically speaking, once you have a decent motor, it's only ever going to wear out the bearings, so they will last. Nitro engines will continually wear out.

Just the start of things to come, buy direct from china lose uk shops in the process, along with helping there economy and not ours (not just RC but many avenues) Soon you won't be able to buy anything in the UK and china will decide what price you pay for your lipos etc as we get used to buying direct. You think UK prices are bad at the moment wait until the chinese start asking for there price when they control the global market with our help.

The 2 part documentary "the Chinese are coming" is just a small scratch on the surface of things to come.

Less power, more heat, heavier, will wear out.

Oh boy, bad enough gas and electric power going up in price, but now our gear too. Think I'll take up slope soaring, that's free power wise and we certainly got our fair share of sh*tty winds for it. Ho Hum.

Not such a problem...just means going to induction motors.. a bit more copper (gone up too) and a bit more manufacturing cost..

Lipos less of an issue ..biggest lithium deposits are sth america (chile or paraguay if memory serves)
No, the real nonsense is selling all our assets to foreigners by making the deal so attactive it costs us money to do it! he bubble is bursting on the 'western lifestyle without work ethic' approach to life where only a few people actually create and everyone else is a 'service industry'...

Rare earths despite their name aren't really all that rare. If China restricts supply, then they will be prospected for and mined from elsewhere. The only reason they aren't being mined elsewhere at the moment is China was selling them so cheaply.

I remember a mate saying some 15 years ago that the Chinese will rule the world one day. I can see it happening.
