  • Dumb thumbs again...

Well after not flying for ages due to rebuilding crashed helis and then DX8 worries I finally got my TT360 in the air properly again this morning. One pack tail in just getting re-aquainted, then on the second pack started to try a bit of nose in. The practice on the MCPx is paying off, wasn't doing too badly, but she ended up moving a bit fast away from me. I was concentrating so hard on correcting that and completely seemed to forget to control height as well.

End result was I was too low and just as I'd got her stable she was too low and I was too slow on the left stick. Bump, or more correctly splash... Would be my luck to go in just the same spot as a nice big puddle. Went in quite gently and probably would have been OK normally but the skid dug in the wet mud at the side of the puddle and she just flipped over.

Luckily the canopy is just the right width and stopped the electronics from getting wet. Everything looks OK other than a new set of blades, flybar, and main gear. The main gear is probably down to me hitting the trainer switch instead of TH ( they're on the opposite side on the 11x ) so had to just pull the throttle down rather than straight off.

So new blades will be ordered today, got all the other bits I need. The good thing is I was much better at holding nose in though. In fact I wasn't going off to the side like I was before, it was just learning to control the pitch of the heli that wasn't great. Weather report looks good for lunchtime so I'll be out with the MCPx for some more practice.

Your crashing & re-building skills are certainly getting honed.
It'll be a blindfolded race in the dark with gloves on for you soon.

I like to simplify any flights I have directly after a crash. Helps the nerves and co-ordinations again. It feels like jumping on the horse again, without it being a stallion.
You can teach a man everything. Apart from experience.

Bad luck with the crash, but well done with the nose in. I havn't had the guts to try it yet, but one day soon!

Oh I'm good at rebuilding, and I get the tracking spot on in one go now hehe I ran one pack doing all my tail in and was very locked in, really happy with that, so went for some nose in. Just a silly mistake on height otherwise I was doing really well.

Well I'm learning my hovering, tail in is nice, side on is getting there, so nose in is next. Probably should have done some lazy8 practice instead but I'm keen to get nose in sorted ASAP. It's quite scary though, it's like learning all over again.

I left nose in flying until a long time after I could fly 8's, loops and rolls. I think the stick practice on those gives you more skill when you come to nose in. You also get more fun flying instead of stuck concentrating on hovering.
Get some height for the nose in, also practice your recovery routine before the nose in, throttle up and tail 180deg so they are natural before long practice at nose in.
Having said that I was practicing 4 point hovering piro's the other day and spending 15 to 20 seconds at each station and just froze nose in, it was holding so well, no inputs, that when it finally drifted I froze and put wrong aileron.
          Keep up the good work.

i agree with this, best advice ever...

i was really struggling with nose in and it started to affect my confidence and i started to feel like i was going backward with my flying... so i started to just do gentle circuit and figure of 8's and then fast forward flight and now my confidence is really good now... and the main thing is im really really enjoying flying.... best thing i ever did...

            thanks

when your practicing your 4 point hoving if you stand in the same direction as the nose of the heli and turn your head to look at the heli it's like flying tail in obviously this is not so easy with nose in but it will get your side orientation flight better , then when your more confidant with side on slowly turn your body more to the center again and you should have mastered side on flight in both directions

This is what I have been doing, works a treat.

No not too bad, will be back in flying state tomorrow. Gears, main shaft, and feathering shaft I've got, just need to wait for spare blades as I had to order those.

I was out at lunch with the MCPx practising nose in on that. Got 5 flights in as one lipo seemed not to work for some reason. I'm hammering the mcpx practising at the minute. Need to order more lipos really.

Oh don't worry I'm doing the other stuff too but if I'm not pushing myself I wont improve.

Need to get my 11x sorted onto phoenix as well now, and work out how you adjust the stick tension. I want to tighten the rudder a bit.

That's good new then, as you say least you got out with the mCPx, just had a run out with the 500 myself & managed a few inverted hoverings & quite a few back/front flips, even got a bit ballsie & tried a tic-toc
which turned out more like a tic flop...but all landed safely

..eventually you end up with my massive stocks of spares and shrug off the small heli crashes until the work bench is littered with a queue of rebuilds.. at which time you hit the sim again.

I used to panic if I didn't have 6 spare sets of blades on hand.. as well as the other 'consumables'
In time you move from pilot crashes to mechanicals - always something.

Once my head clears of it's current hassles I may go and burn a few lipos..such a nice day!

Well I've got plenty of bits, but blades I don't have. I did order more than one set but Andy only had one set of 360mm blades in. I wish for the day when all my crashes are mechanical issues

Pete, why don't you use the cheaper 325 blades for now, it seems silly to use the more expensive 360's at the moment.
That would be what I would do

I did think about that James. But it flies more stable on the bigger blades, and there's only £4 difference in the price between the two sizes.

I'm going to go a bit more careful with a bit of height for now, and hammering the MCPx nose in. The thing is I can do it fairly well with the MCPx now, all be it a bit untidy at times, so I know I can do it, just need to train the brain to work faster I'll be hitting the Sim as well. Might go more easy on the TT360 and ease back into nose in for a few flights though
