  • X650 Quad a month down the line!

Started flying an X650 about a month ago and now feel I can throw it around more confidently using what I call “Stunt” mode rather than the safer “Hover” mode which is self levelling.

As a camera platform I’m really pleased with it and I think it is more than capable in quite windy conditions although the picture isn’t as stable when fighting strong winds!

In Stunt mode the thing really shifts and can climb as quickly as a normal heli but do make sure you check all your props pre flight as I lost one doing a “Turbo Takeoff” the results are on my Youtube site!!!

As for crash ability, I have had one mishap due to throwing a prop and several others due to trying some acrobatics hoping it would cope with loops etc, my first couple of loops ended with the thing landing in the long grass (My Safety Cushion) as it wasn’t able to counter the downward dive as quickly as I’d hoped it will complete a loop if you make it more of a flip rather than a giant Ferris wheel style loop over where it gains downward velocity L

Damage wise I would say from the four or five times I’ve had to wade through the long grass to fetch it I can normally remove the grass from the rotors put it on the floor and take off again J

Sadly I did a proper job on it the other day when it threw a fit at sixty feet plus and landed on one motor causing damage to the main frame and camera mounting assembly.

Total repair bill excluding the camera assembly was about twenty quid and the repair is fairly easy as well – Happy Days!!!

That said I have decided to adapt my 650 now and I’m using a set of 600 sized heli landing gear instead of the long spindly legs, I plan to mount the camera up front and see how it fairs in this configuration.

The quad is darn good fun and different enough from a heli to make it worthwhile, I enjoy filming so use it as much if not more than my heli now.

Once I finish my adaptation I will put a picky on the forum, it’s now a super low profile rather than a daddy Long Legs and I’m hoping it will fly better now that it’s in the X configuration rather than the + style which is tamer for beginners.

Quads are fun but they’re not heli’s as such so wouldn’t suit everyone!

    Hi John,

Great write-up, very helpful for me at the moment.

Have you tried any stills photography, or just video? I have a friend who's eager to risk his SLR to get some elevated shots. Do you think the X650 would fly ok with an SLR stuck on it? Probably more of a vibration issue rather than stabilisation as such I'd have thought.

    Regs, Tom.

      Hi John

just had a quick look at one of your utube videos. What camera are you using.

I have been dabbling with cameras on my 500 using a DIY camera mount, and always keen to see the video output from different cameras. A guy at my club has offered me the loan of a gopro HD to try which i'm quite looking forward to.

Tom. Have done some still A/P but I use a camera that I set to 5 second time lapse and select what I want afterward, that said a great many of the shots are blurred so a moments hovering helps for clarity!

Daz. I use a V Hold helmet camera that produces HD film and has survived several bad crashes lol

The Go Pro is one of the best and should give nice results.

What mode do you fly in, I've set one I'm setting up for someone as plus mode, but I'm thinking it maybe more stable in X mode? Also how do you check it's in hover or stuntmode, just via the XAircraft software?

Hiya. I flew mine in Plus Mode and it worked really well, I then had a mishap about a month ago and I'm still waiting for XA to release the correct download for the standard 650 so I can get airborne again.

Via the PC is the safest way to check if your in Stunt or Cruise mode but that said it is quite apparent if you try to take off in Stunt mode as it's pretty darn lively :-)

I can't wait to get mine fixed as they're great fun but XA have been a bit awkward of late and not exactly quick on the help front!

What download do you need and why do you need it after a mishap?

Have you use GPS & Compass at all yet, as I'm trying to set this up too, if only for position hold as there is only a 7 channel RX installed?

Nice write up John. I'm looking at one of these with a GoPro Hero for filming events etc. Cheers! Dan

                    heliclown as per below :-)

I've not been able to add anything for quite a while as I'm still grounded due to programing issues!

It's taken so long to get sorted I even crept back on to the heli scene with an old 500 a few weeks back :-)
