I've been having a bit of bother with my 700 start shaft and the cup loosening, snapped shaft, new shaft and cup..loosening ..filed huge flats.. still loosening. In fact last week I got to the field to find the cup missing.
So I ordered yet another shaft, cup and some dog-tooth grubscrews.
Last night I dropped the engine (usual heli upside-down method) put flats where the dimples were on the shaft just the right sized to fit the dog points on the grubscrews... put the darned things in with red threadlock and a torque bar through the driver to dog the beggar down!!
I get to the field and just as I start it the cup came off!!
OK at least it's running. I fish out the cup sitting on the clutch stack thingy and cart heli to the flight line. Blades start to spin up as I open throttle..the gov kicks in... and there's a nasty tinny sound and no power to the rotors...

Of all things I find the other original start cup sitting on the clutch stack and rattling. How? Heli spent last night inverted and upright and in my lap etc.. Still doesn't explain the power loss..but everything feels ok,.. no sign slippage etc.
So I dog down a starting cup just as, leave the canopy off and fire up. Everything works fine. Go to the start line and run it up..everything fine. It has to have managed to start running backwards as the gov kicked in before?
I've just got it into a hover and Brian carts his plank out and blasted well takes off. I manoeuver out of his way and land. He's been sitting, jawing all morning.. could have sat 10 more?
So I refit the canopy, check everything else again , top off the tank and wait for Brian to blasted well land so I can finally have a flight.
He lands, taxiis to the apron, kneels down to check his model... and then keels over and cracks his head on the mud. I waited a mo but it looked like he wasn't messing about and since he was just breathing I thought I'd better have a look..
Yup.. spark out in a faint and lips a tad blue. He starts to come around while I'm debating whether to fetch a shovel or kiss that hairy face, starts to roll over and passes out again.
Other plank pilots were by me then ..so I thought we better call an ambulance.
I'm pretty sure we could have got Pizza quicker..
It finally rocks up at the same time as the paramedic and parks on the runway..sorts Brian out and was there a long time.
Sadly I thought it an inappropriate time to ask them to park in the bloody pits and let me fly...
By the time they'd carted Brian off the wind was picking up and I must admit I'd gone off bothering.. so we packed up his gear too and left.
I'll drop the engine tonight and re-do the shaft then?
..and Brian? He'll be fine.
