  • When is it time for a governor

I take it by reading the threads on here that most of the flyers use a governor. I was just wondering when I should start to think about this piece of kit for my heli.

its not expensive in comarision to other items so I was thinking now im getting into doing aerobatics with the thing and flying it around alot more should I start to consider getting one or do they only really come into their own when you really start to push the chopper?

as soon as your running up and down the pitch they are definitly worth having. its so easy to unload the model by accident in idle up and find yourself with 2500rpm on the head.

reduces the pilot work load a lot.

      Ditto what Ade said...

Sounds like you'll benefit from one now!

I was doing some mild aerobatics before getting my governor.
I foundit hard to get good power from the motor without overspeeding on descents. Flicking into normal to descend doesn't work upside down.
My revlock has made a big difference. Well worth the money.

ok I get the governor keeps the headspeed constant.
I also believe it kicks in at a certain throttle level.

but is it something you have active all the time or is it something you switch in when you are doing manouvers?

as I would have thought if you have a high headspeed its gonna be screaming if your just hovering around? or have I got the wrong end of the stick on this one. thinking about it I probably know less than I need to to use one of these things LOL

My revlock work with my idle switch.
Basically it's off for normal mode, set to a rev setting in idle1 and a higher setting for idle2

Not doing too much aeros at the moment but worth having I would say
Note to self, Must Fly more

Get a Revlock 10 mate in idleup 1 you can set it for a head speed of 1650 to 1700 & it's only active over 20% throttle. Idle up 2 is set for about 1850 rpm for normal pootling about active all the time idel up 2 is switched in & idle up 3 as idle up 2 i.e allways active & set for 2000 to 2100 rpm for 3d.
I've just put one on my raptor 30 & I wont ever be going back to not having one
Makes it so much easier with a constant head speed ive realy noticed the difference.

I always use governors,i see them as just as important as a Transmitter,,ie i wont fly without it...

I first used my revlock when I only had a 6ch rx. Thus I only had one rpm setting (2000 rpm), and it kicked in as soon as the throttle opened more than 20%.
It was no problem like that.
now I have a 7ch rx, so I changed it so it is not active in normal, mode 1 =1700, mode 2 = 2000 rpm.
ITs actually the motor revs you set, so to get 2000 rpm onthe head the revlock is set for 17000 on the motor (raptor 50, 8.5:1).
The point of the governor is the motor is never screaming, it just goes at contant speed whatever you are doing.

and I know this one is going to get some opinions but

Revloc 10 has already been suggested, any other recommendations? want a simple to setup and use one to begin with.

also, how do you know what headspeed your setting it too, do you actually tell the unit the speed you want or do you tac the headspeed and adjust until you have the speed you want?

I'm no expert as I'm just getting into setting up my first nitro heli, but my understanding is you multiply your desired headspeed by the gear ratio and that gives you the motor rpm. That's what you set the revlock to.

i.e. if you want 1850 HS, 1850 x 8.5 (assuming that's the ratio) = 1575 rpm motor speed. Just dial that into the revlock and away you go!

I find the Throttle Jockey RevMax really easy to setup. It's not the best jockey out there as it can overspeed when flying hard 3D and unloading the head - but it can keep a reasonably good headspeed in my experience.
Certainly worth a look to begin with due to the very simple setup.

                          Cheers,

i like thottle jockey too..but at the moment we are using csm rl20's..the reason i say at the moment is..we are waiting for the rl30..(THIS WEEK)..THIS helps over pitching problems also for ultimate control..id wait for that.the csm pilots should all be using these in the masters(i think)
                              cheers craig
