  • Perplexing Tail Problem

    Hi All,

Miniture Aircraft Fury 55, belt driven tail.
Flybarless, running Vbar V5 Blueline Pro software.
    Align DS650 Tail Servo
    KBDD 92mm Tail Blades

Flying around yesterday completely fine, come in and do a bit of hovering, and after a while, suddenly, the tail goes crazy, it starts to piro extremely fast at the rate it does when you have the gyro sense reversed for example. I hit hold and put it down ok.

Now i come to check it over, all i can find is a slightly damaged tail blade tip, which could have been from the hasty landing, and slightly out of line tail rod guide and thats it.
Belt tension is fine, belt is intact
Tail blade grips are fine, with no play, links are fine, connection to the bellcrank fine, the whole tail mechanism working smoothly.
Pushrod is smooth, no play on any of the ball links.
Servo gears are intact, no damage inside the case with wires fraying to the board or whatever. I've nto inspected the entire wire run of the servo yet, but all the parts which i can see are fine without fraying.
Servo still operates smoothly, to its limits without obvious fault.
Vbar event log doesn't show anything out of the ordinary.

    So, any ideas?

    Matt

Think Callum is having the same issue, maybe worth a PM.

      Will do thanks

It turns out my previous statement was incorrect. There is a line in the Vbar event log that i missed-

Error Code 80 Tail Sensor shows no actual response

Just posted on helifreak to see if someone can decode this error code for me, as to whether it points to a dodgy vbar sensor, or a dodgy tail servo.
My Align 600 has the same tail servo installed, so i've swapped them over and i'm going to fly the Fury again this afternoon and see what happens.

      Thanks

      Matt

That's looks like a tail sensor fault in the vbar gyro. Post it on the vstabi forum, they will give you a definitive answer

Well i can elaborate on my fault, seeing as i've just watched my Fury throw itself into the floor!

Looks to be the sensor plug vibrating out of the Vbar unit, despite being glued in with hot glue. Post crash inspection showed that i could easily push the plug a good 3-4mm back into the Vbar unit.
The event log shows a nice clean flight until a 'connection with sensor lost' or similar message, followed by a million errors about lost contact with elevator servo etc, cyclic ring active, extreme vibration etc etc.

Damage, to be fair, is quite light, i managed some how to do a semi auto in the middle of the communications breakdown. Landing gear has gone, a servo horn snapped, a few ball linkages mangled, but everything else seems ok including the blades, and i didn't have the canopy on either.
