  • OS 55 HZ - Bearings seemed to have failed already

Trex 600 started has developed a nasty screech while hovering...not very loud, but its there.

Obviously a bearing gone somewhere, so replaced the bearings in the clutch stack, they were knackered (and the clutch and the bell)....nope, still there.....Replaced the bearings on the main shaft....they also were knackered. Screech still there.

Check the torque tube bearing and that seems fine, so it would I guess the bearings on the engine are on the way out. Which as its only done a gallon and a halve, seems a bit premature.

Interesting that 4 bearings on the model had gone and not caused any problems though.

This is a new engine - the previous one was replaced under warrenty and I've been lovingly putting in after run oil at the end of a days flying.

So...can't say I'm terribly impressed with OS engines.

unusual to screech normally rattle at idle , only time i had a screech from an engine was when the ring went , but the 55 is to big for the bearings that are the same size as the hyper and that ate bearings imo get a good supply as they go on a regular basis from what ive seen on hear , i binned mine a long time ago as it just wasnt right and went back to the tt 53 witch is about 4 years old and still going fine , says it all to me

When you say screech is it a high pitched wine ???

Imagine a chunk of metal being cut on a lathe and the high pitch squeek/screech that it makes without lubricant.

If if sounds like that then its fairly normal and I've heard it on many 600's. It's less obvious nose in and it beds in after a couple of gallons and goes away.

Unfortunatly bearings are the burden of all OS owners, you can purge the tanks, close the engine off, store it upside down, fill it with after run oil, (I even tried removeing the backplate after every outing and filling it up with AR oil) Ive tried, stainless steel ones, ceramic ones, twenty quid ones, two quid ones, shielded ones, Ive used Optifuel, model technics, Rapicon and I've stored it in the house, upstairs, downstairs and in my ladies chamber but not a jot of improvment, nothing ever made a differnce for me.

I probably do mine too often (I just love the "new bearing" feeling) but I try and change my rear every 10 litres and the front every 20, once you get used to changing them only takes half an hour or so and it gives me something to do while dancing on ice is on!

Not noticable on tick over, but sound of tortured metal when hovering, which made me think it was a bearing elsewhere in the model. The ones I've looked at so far have all been in pretty poor condition, but I've replaced all the main ones and the problem is still there.

Begining to have similar thoughts. There's a model shop not too far from me who build their own engines and it might be worth takling to them, rather than go the YS/Thunder Tiger route.

Whip out the clutch bell bearings and check those!

All ready done that! The main bearing there was very noisy and the one way bearing on the clutch was iffy, so replaced the bell, the clutch, the starter shaft bit and the bearings.

That only leaves the TT & tail bearings then! I doubt its the engine bearings cause theyre usually noisy all the time rather than only in a hover.

Well, I'd be inclined to agree, but I popped the torque tube out while on the field and that seemed fine. The only remaining set is the couple within the torque tube gear box, but they're pretty much sealed away from any crud which could get in and ruin them. I'll check anway.

How many tanks have you put through it? On Coolpower.. I had a 2 sets go after a gallon even though its meant to be a better fuel with no afterrun.. the bearings do get battered on this engine but I have found that using cheap bearing from Search Results : RCbearings.co.uk, For a friction free RC! last 10x longer and at £1.25 per set (ping off shield though) compared to OEM £19.99 or half price originals at SKF 61902 Open Deep Groove Ball Bearing 15x28x7mm Simply Bearings Ltd its a bargain!!

I take it you're buying the shielded one's and pulling the shields? I found I had to work a hole into the shield to pry it off with a marginal worry of creating soem swarf. Have you got a better method?

Yes,.. I did edit my post.. I accidentally ordered the shielded ones first time round (got 5 sets of them) So instead off throwing them away I was taking the shield off.
I dont have any problems getting the shield off.. I have one of those 50-1 Rolson tool kits and one of the attachments is a very slim flat head and I use that to take the shield off.. no problems at all, or use screwdrivers for glasses
