Okay, not everyone is in the fortunate position to be able to afford having their build and set up checked or be near someone who can do it. Having spent the best part of £1400 over the last couple of months starting from scratch, my logic said another £70 is only 5% of the total cost and less than the cost of repairs caused by the inevitable accident. Anyway, I spent this afternoon at the Paul Heckles Flying School near Swindon and wow, what a time I had. Paul is a top man, his experience and ability to get across the intricacies of servo set up and how the Spektrum DX7 works to a simple mechanical engineer, was an education. 2 hours painstakingly checking mechanical set up, linkage lengths, swashplate positioning, ensuring the servos operate in the right direction and combination for the eCCPM, the gyro is hooked up and sensing properly and finally programming the DX7, fine tuning the servo set up and stick response for the not quite so adventurous flyer. By the end of the afternoon, the bench set up looked spot on and it was time for the maiden shake down. I'm not too proud to admit I was very glad the first flight was in the hands of someone who knew what they were doing and what a first flight ! Straight out of the box, crisp and true, stable but responsive and my, what a sound ! Confidence is sky high and I look forward to the weekend for my first tentative flights. If you can afford it or even save for it, I have to recommend having someone competent check your build, it's got to be worth it in the long run.
