  • Ooops I did it again...

No not the Britney version, I've clipped the tail again and broken a front TT gear again

Does anyone have a Rave450 that they've upgraded the gears on? Wondering if they're much better. I'm thinking of putting in the front ones and using the upgraded Rave on the tail spindle and the Phoenixtech rear TT gear. Wondering if that will mean I just strip the rear TT gear which will be easier to replace each time

They are much stronger but the early rave ones were also slightly weak, if it'l fit give it a go.

What you might be worth doing and i don't know if its available for your kit is to consider a belt drive, there a lot more tollerent and as a beginner will keep you flying longer.

They definitely fit, will maybe try them while rebuilding this time

I only clipped the tail this time as I was trying to hover side on on my weakest side and overcompensated for the wind catching it a bit. It'll teach me to run before I can walk, side on, weakest side, in a wind, when I'm only just a real beginner. lol

How about hovering a little higher next time. That way there's no chance of catching the tail

Well it was a sequence of events that caused it, not height as I had that to begin with, around head height.

Basically the wind caught the heli and it started to climb and move forwards, I went to correct dropped the collective a bit too much and she dropped quick, so I put the power back on, bit too much, and ended up pulling back on the cyclic, then realised it was climbing, and starting to move backwards quicker than I wanted and so when I dropped the collective did it a bit too much again.

The heli kind of see-sawed it's way towards the ground.

Newbie error of not being fast enough with inputs. Actually almost had her level as the tail clipped annoyingly. Only clipped some wet mud as well.

I've only had a quick look but it seems the only damage is that the bevelled front tube gear has split and so moved up the shaft. Easy 15minute fix luckily.

Oh well, these things happen, often in the blink of an eye.
Funny thing is, when you play them back in your mind its like watching it in slow motion. Anyway, its all part of the learning curve, and at least its a quick fix

I would also consider moving to the belt driven tail, not had tt gears before but never had any issues with the belt while learning, might save you a few quid

U can always put the tt gear back on when your a bit more confident.

Indeed, after playing back I know what I did wrong, I panicked and over corrected. But I should maybe not try side on in less than ideal conditions until I'm ready

I'm not bothered by it, quick fix and I'll be off again. Just means I didn't get as much practice as planned in this lunch.

Unless I buy another heli I'm not going to be able to have a belt drive so I'm stuck with what I have. I knew the score when I bought it and was prepared for the extra complication. The good thing is the gears are only £2.25 so it's not expensive to repair, just annoying.

Most importantly though you know how it was caused, many times things like this happen and the flyer doesn'y know why and it becomes unsettling.

One thing i would say is, if it was windy then from what your saying is it sounds like heli is sensitive to hovering around the mid sticks, try upping the headspeed in windy conditions as a first, dial in more expo to avoid your over corrections.

Also, add some flybar weights which will slow the response slightly but add stability.

how about putting a little wire extension on the back fin so it keeps the tail lifted that little bit more away from the ground, ive seen people do it before on here
                    All the best

All sorted, 15mins to sort it including finding the part and the tools etc. Looks like it was a week gear actually as the bit next to the shaft has shattered.
