  • walkera as a first heli

Hi everybody, I joined the forum a couple of days ago and I was waiting for the right opportunity to place my first post and say hello to everybody.

Roughly 20 days ago I bought my first heli: I wanted an heli that could flight inside, it had to be cheap but it had to have the flight controls (ie not fixed pitch) of better models --> the choice went on a not so recommended walkera 52.

Yesterday I was browsing the net for general info on rc-helis and noticed that even electric motors need some maintenance ( every 5 flights apparently) but I kind of ignored the article. Today I'm happily trying to learn hovering and the main motor fails...dead.

bad luck? walkera really _is_ that bad? or that maintenance was really needed

    cheers

    Hello and welcome

I have never heard of an electric motor needing maintenance after 5 flights

I have a Trex 450 and have not touched the motor in quite a few flights.

I have never owned a Walkera so I cannot comment on the general quality but I believe they do receive a lot of bad press.

    Cheers

yeah sure trex is better but I couldn't really flight it in _my_ living room tho!
the walkera 52 has a main rotor diam of 340mm whilst the smallest trex i could find was 600mm (I'm not expert so I could be _super wrong_ here).

btw, this was the source of my info

Thats the 50 size heli - not for living room use...
The Trex 450 SE V2 is way better than the Walkera stuff. No comparison.

                  Hi Leo

Welcome to the forum and the hobby. I hope you'll find it as addictive as the rest of us do.

Motor failure after 20 days? I'd take it back if I was you.

                  Regards

Hi and welcome. I think i'd go for a twister cp v2 over the walkera.

Or not bother and get a medevac or alike if you want to fly it in your living room, even the walkera will be very difficult to fly in your living room unless its the size of your garden lol and will make a mess of the furniture too!

What ever you do have fun and be ready for the repair bills

                      Cheers Dor

I'll deny saying this if anyone quotes me, but my recently aquired Twister Medevac is a great bit of kit for stooging around indoors or out in light airs.

The stable contra rototing jobs can be flown arround the house withut destroying the furnature.
The fixed pitch tail roytor ones can too - but it is more likely to hit things.
The collective pitch helis are all a bit to furious for inddor flying - you need a ballroom/gym/sports hall.
Its a lot more fun to fly a trex in a bigger space without trees etc you can learn to hover one in the garden (but you need quite a bit of space really to go nose in).
A trex in your living room will first blow all the pictures off the wall and second try to chew holes in your sofa and take bites out of the table legs!

My trex LOOKS faster than my Raptor 50 - though I know it isn't really!

hi - thanks to everybody - a truly warm welcome.

take it back - was probably the most sensible suggestion and the one I liked the most! Unfortunately when you buy stuff on ebay a return after 20 days is often not an option.

I did buy a crashed heli as well, I was interested in the batteries but the main motor turned out to be useful too :-)

I changed it last night and the only real problem was putting back some screws that were continuously driven away by the magnetic field generated by the motor.

It's clear now that at least in theory I won't have to change the motor every couple of days

                              cheers
