  • trex 500 tx set up

does anyone have any set up advise for the trex 500 , making it tamer for a relative beginner (flying slow circuits with the 400). boggys sticky was great for the 400, but some tx settings for the 500, and any mechanical mods etc to do the same to the 500 would be useful. thanks

The 500 is great in standard form, no real upgrades needed unless your a bling junkie

The belt driven tail tends to hold up better in crashes than the torque tube.

    What tx are you using?

using dx6i. heli has all electrics ready to go. just need to set gyro and tail pitch slider movement, and throttle/pitch curves etc best suited to to my level of experience.... watching the vidoes

            (I should start by saying I'm no expert...but I have a 450 and a 500)

I'm assuming you have a pitch gauge. In the tx setup your idle-up/stunt pitch 'curce' to be a straight line from 0 to 100, and then either disconnect two wires from the motor (or alternatively set your throttle curves in the tx to all 0 - for both IdleUp/Stunt and normal...but quicker to pull the two leads tbh!).

Then use the pitch gauge and check you get 0 at mid stick and no more then +11/-11 full positive/full negative. Once you have that done you can again use the pitch gauge to check the cyclic pitch - and aim for no more than 6 degrees.

Now, to tame it down you can setup your 'normal' mode pitch curve to something like
40-45-50-60-70. I would set the throttle curve to be fairly high...I know on mine (6s with 13T pinion) I think I needed to keep over about 70 to 75% or I'd get tail bobbing.

So I'd try a 'normal' mode curve of 0-40-70-80-90.

If you are not going to use idle up you may as well inhibit it for now. You may also want to set your throttle hold pitch curve to match your normal one so it doesn't suddenly jump when you switch throttle hold on....(although if you are just flying around gently then you are unlikely to be trying to do autos...so I suspect the only time you hit TH is after you have landed ..(or crashed...eek!))

anyway - would thoroughly recommend the finless bob's setup videos over on Helifreak...he explains it much better than I can!
[edit: ah - just spotted someone has already linked you to them ]

just put the pitch gauge on ... stunt centre stick +4, top +13, bottom -6.5
              normal, bottom +1, centre +3.5, top +12
is it best to alter this mechanicaly, or in the tx

not sure ross, as work in bristol is now random. mostly down here at the moment, just occasional social to bristol. geek has said he will help with the set up (missed him at the indoor in weston tonight!) but just trying to do as much as possible myself before i meet him. thanks for the offer. it seems destined to never happen

                  you coming to Charlton Saturday?

You might need to help me on the dx6i
                  I don't use them

The servo's are the same as it's flown before?
if so field should be ok
best your there to have the headspeed as you like etc

I fly mode 1 but sure James would test it for you if you want

servos are the same. head had been taken off and no rx. have put ar6200 in it and everything moving in the right direction now. pitch out a bit as above, and never set up a 401 before. my total experience is five crashes of varying severity with the blade 400, setting it up and getting it in the air again. all a while ago now as i have not spilled it for a while. dont have a charger yet for 6s, but on on the way from ebay (bantam bc6 10 field charger) hopefully here tomorrow. heli came with two good align batts, and four old ones on their way out. i need to make up a lead for doubling up my 3s, as i have 8 of these of varying makes, but need to get some wire (plenty of conectors) is there anywhere local to get the right wire(nearer than weston or yeovil) if the charger does not arrive then i'm a bit stuck on the power.

Hi m8, it you get +13 to -6.5 with +4 in the middle with a pitch curve in the tx of 0-25-50-75-100 then you have to make mechanical adjustments.

You should set the pitch to 50% and then make sure each servo arm is level (i.e. arm is 90 degrees to the body) - use sub trim on the tx as necessary.

once you have found the centre point you then want to work your way up the links and have everything level and end up with 0 degrees pitch.

much easier to watch the finless bob videos... you want the ccpm setup 1 and 2... Heli Skills and Setup 101 - LOOK here first! - HeliFreak

Mechanicaly it should be pretty much ok so do the adjustments on the Tx Harvey, I think I had it 0 at mid stick, +/- 11 top & bottom (unless anything got damaged in the post of course)

So play with the "norm" pitch curve to get around -3 bottom, 0 mid +9 and you cant go far wrong.
