  • Flyin' Fish

Due to my girlfriends persistant worry about the standard of my flying,(crashing?) she's bought me a voucher for 10 hours training at flyin' fish in London.

Unfortunatiy this now present's me with a major logistical and financial nightmare.

Logistical because i have to get me, her and all my helicopter gear from up north (Yorkshire) to the big smoke. Not to mention the large amount of luggage she will need for the four day's we are planning.
Financial not just because i drive a 3.9 ltr Range Rover but she wants to go shopping while we' re there. I'm beggining to suspect the real reason for the voucher!!

    Anyway onto the questions:

    Has anyone been?
    What can i expect?
Is there anything heli wise i need to take?(I think i have most of the basic's)
Does any one know any nice hotels nearby?

    Cheers Chris

Sounds to me thats she's fishing for a spending spree , JR Hartley is the only person I've heard of that does flyfishing .

I have been to london a good few times though, where abouts around london is it ?

Heliwise, I'd take the lot just so that your good lady can go shopping in peace, while your off to a nearby club for a spot of your own fun
    Cheers

I know there are some good hotels around Heathrow, I've stayed a few times at the post house hotel....not exactly cheap but very good. I believe the Holiday Inn is also good as well. Heathrow is about 15-20 mins from Northolt.

        Just take all your gear
        Cheers

The only thing I found hard about FLY- fishing was ----
the really small hooks you need to catch flies. Hmmmm
Planes are for people who can\'t fly Helis

I had an hour session with Dave Fisher at Flyin' Fish last Friday afternoon. I would highly recommend it to anyone, beginner or experienced pilot alike.

I went down there with the intention of doing some pirouetting maouevres, things like loops and flips etc. We started by going through some basic hovering, circuits, loops, rolls, inverted hovering, forward and backwards flight, identifying areas of my flying that needs brushing up as we went.

He then demonstrated an amazingly accurate FAI style pirouetting loop, which he then broke down into four smaller and more manageable parts, forwards loops, backwards loops and both tail in and nose in sideways loops, which when you put it all together by doing a quarter loop of all four in the same loop, you end up with a pirouetting loop 8)

He is a great teacher and an amazingly good pilot, as when you make a mistake he will take the heli back to the point that things started getting out of shape as if you were reversing a video 8O

He says that one of the most important parts of flying is angles, by that he means that when we all learn to hover in different orientations, like tail in, nose in and side on. But how many of us practice things like half way between side on and nose in both sides of nose in and both right way up and inverted? If you can do this, you can stop a manouevre at any point and hover for a moment or so to give you a chance to think about what part comes next.

I flew his model, which for circuits and beyond is a fury with a webra 61 and a 90 size MP2. It is a really smooth and stable model, with both the pitch and cyclic responses being a little on the tame side in the hover but wang the sticks around and it can certainly move.

I would suggest anyone considering it should think seriously about having at least a couple of hours, as the hour I had wasnt really long enough.

I am already thinking about when I will go down again for another session with him 8)

I took my camcorder so managed to get some video of both myself and a friend of mine flying, as and when I can get it from the camcorder to the PC I will upload a copy to the video section.

                  Cheers,

                  Pete.

                      Hi Stuart,

Yeah, Ive got about 40 minutes of raw video on 8mm tape from the Bath fly-in.

Hopefully I will be sorted with a usb video capture and editing thingy in the next few days so I'll be able to get that on the PC, the Flyin' Fish stuff and some of the 3d Masters, as I am there all weekend.

In the next fortnight or so you should see a whole lot of video stuff coming your way

                      Cheers,

                      Pete.
