  • Workshop Insurance

My home insurance is up for renewal in a month or so and I need to find some appropriate insurance for the contents of my workshop against fire and theft. My home insurance policy used to have it covered for £10k for just a very small increase on the premium, but they have changed the terms of the policy last year and now it's down to £1500, which ain't enough.

My workshop is a brick built structure which is separate from the house but within the curtilage of the property. All these things combined, make just about every domestic insurer run a mile when I ask about a specific clause to cover the radio controlled models and tools etc in the workshop. On the whole, they simply won't cover it for any premium.

Anyway, a bit of Google searching this evening took me to a model engineers forum which then pointed me to this website -> Walker Midgely Insurance Brokers Limited

Looks quite promising and I've requested a call back to discuss my requirements.

Anybody used them or similar? Any feedback? Anyone need something similar?

Got mine insured and they are in the garage.

They are down as specified items as combined they come to quite a bit plus with all the bits and bobs.

This is with Santander and I know barclays also do it as I just got a quote as they do 50% off for premier accounts but it still was not as cheap as Santander cos my missus works for them butthese are 2 insurers that do it if that helps.

If I recall about £8.50 per £1000 covered, if you call them they will email you a proposal form.

The main problem I faced was finding someone who would insure the Nitro models - as the underwriters stated they would only insure garden machinery with internal combustion engines and not models. Electric models were not a problem! They would not accept that an inverted glow helicopter made a good strimmer

I have all my RC stuff, helis planes, tools etc etc insured with them. Always had a first class service. Although on-line applications aren't their strong point, but don't let that put you off.
I have listed everything out, item for item along with photo's as proof. They advised this was the best way should something happen, I would be in a very stong position to get a like for like replacement.
You need to prove that your melted/stolen 550 did infact have £300 worth of servos and not some £9.99 junk.

Surely it should be for them to prove we have not as we are paying more money for more expensive items, if the case was they think we only had cheap crap inside our heli's then they should state this at the start and therefore we pay less a premium.

When I spoke about mine they wanted a total per model.

And yes mine are all electric and I do remember her commenting on engines and saying something but I zoned out then

If only that was the case, I've got this £1M diamond I'd like to insure please ...

The real effort and proof always triggers when you want to make a claim, not when you want to pay a premium.

The other thing to be careful about is under-declaring as if for example you declare £5,000 of equipment then later discover after a loss that it should have been £10,000, you'd only actually get 50% of any claim paid out even if the total was under £5,000 as you are deemed to be carrying 50% of the risk yourself.

                Mark T Quoted:

"The real effort and proof always triggers when you want to make a claim, not when you want to pay a premium".

Couldn't agree more Mark, i have home insurance through Legal and General, two days before xmas we had a burst hot water pipe in the kitchen- It had clearly been pumping hot water for the majority of the day and the kitchen was like a sauna when we returned around 10pm, the result being that a number of my kitchen units, cupboard doors, worktops etc. have warped and started to delaminate, laminate flooring is goosed and paint has started to peel off the walls!

Spoke to insurance who SEEMED very helpful, was told to send a quote, which i have, told me they will only pay for the units and doors that are damaged, explained that it's an MFI kitchen that is no longer available due to them going bust, Told ME to have a look around and see if i could find some replacements!!

This was weeks ago, they've now got another claims handling firm to call me, who have now said that someone else will ring me today so i can explain AGAIN exactly what happened and THEN they will make an appointment for a further person to come and visit to inspect the damage and decide what they're willing to pay for, in my honest opinion they are a sack of shit like all insurers who only want your money but then in the event of a claim seek every possible avenue of wriggling out of paying up, sorry for the long rant but insurers really **** me off

                  Ok, update time.

I made a policy proposal through Walter Midgely brokers and they came back with a quote (for the model stuff only) that was almost (but not quite) equal to my current home insurance policy. So, I'd have to pay for my home insurance and the workshop insurance separately = double bubble. I also spoke to them on the phone, and they wanted detailed lists (plus photos if you want to be really sure) of everything insured, and have a £10 management fee every time you want to change the list - i.e. buy/sell a heli etc. The policy (through RSA) seems very model appropriate but also equally expensive and a bit of a ball-ache to manage.

So I went to Barclays bank on Jamin_00's suggestion (as a Additions Plus account holder and user of the same branch for approx 33 years or so) and asked them. Their cover goes as far as £50k for the outbuildings, but only £3k for the contents = not enough.

I've now been looking online at the Santander option also on Jamin_00's suggestion and their policy looks really good on paper with outbuildings covered to the full extent of the policy and contents covered as well, the same as the house (lots of options here), and the price is just fine.

I'm going to talk to Santander sometime tomorrow just to cross the ts and dot the is, but it looks like an excellent policy.

                  Thanks.

Santander just wasted over an hour of my life!

The online quotation was £280. I waited on hold for 35 minutes to get through to an advisor this evening, only to be told that my quotation was now £420! Their website states categorically that they insure the contents of outbuildings up to the total sum of the insurance policy (i.e. the same as the house), but oh no - £2k limit when you talk to the monkeys. Complete and utter tripe!

So, back to Google and a bit more searching with new terms, and Direct Line came up top of the list. Rang them and got straight through to an advisor, and asked the question about outbuildings contents - got the answer, "Up to the total of the policy." "Are you sure?" I asked. "Yes, I'll check the underwriter's documents." She did and indeed read them out loud to me down the phone, and bugger me, they cover outbuildings contents up to the value of the policy. They don't need lists of equipment but she suggested (not insisted) that some photos would be a good idea.

The price was a bit over what I've been paying in the past, but I've added some extra home cover elements and increased the policy limit as well, so I'm happy with the figure. Job done............... at last!

Direct Line get my vote of confidence on this issue.

Edit: the policy isn't due to start for a few weeks yet until after the current one runs out, but I'll check out the bit about combustion engines when the documents come through. She never asked what the contents of the workshop were and just said the contents would be covered.

Not sure if it would be easier to say it was a business and get some form of business insurance.

I insured my van through Direct Line yet the vehicle policy did not cover tools or materials within the vehicle, that was an extra policy!

Lying to insurance companies just gives them an easy opt-out when it comes to coughing up.

I'm kinda confident that Direct Line will do the bizz, but still need to read it in black and white before I'm completely convinced.

Im not suggesting you lie, im just suggesting that a business insurance broker may have other options for contents only and outbuildings.

Try giving the NFU a ring as they are pretty good at custom packages.
