  • Who brought that to the field !!

    Hi All,

As the title suggests this one is a little unusual to say the least.

    I went flying today and here's what happened;

Picture this, you have been invited as a guest to fly at another field which is on the edge of the military training area of Salisbury Plain with views as far as the eye can see in pretty much all directions, apart from the long track used to access the site from the main road.

As you drive along the track on your right is a chicken farm with hundred upon hundreds of chickens in various free range penns and enclosures, each with their own little wooden house. As you drive past this you see in the distance in front of you and right over the track about 20 foot up a damn great army gazelle helicopter just sat there hovering.

As you get closer to the end of the track with a small wooded copse either side of the track you realise first that you dont have your digital camera with you  and second that the helicopter is actually hiding beneath the tree line.

As you get closer still to this hovering giant both the crew are smiling and waving at you, which you return the compliment, and then the helicopter moves about 20 yards to the left out of the way of the track so you can drive past, as you do so the van is bufeted in the rotor wash

Once you get to the edge of the flight line and stop you get out to see the helicopter having moved back over the track once more just sat there hovering about 20 foot up again, you can hear the blades as they generate the necessary lift to keep this hulking great thing airborne.

The helicopter hovers there for a further 15 or 20 minutes or so and then you hear the head speed increase along with the pitch of the turbine increase as the pilot opens the throttle and then it climbs out to an altitude of several hundred feet, along with 3 others that were hovering behind other small wooded areas near by which you hadnt even noticed 8O

They then flew off in some sort of formation and could be seen for the next hour or so flying around the area some distance away.

Now that was an impressive sight

Just thought I would share that with you

    Cheers,

    Pete.

    Pete,

Sounds jaw dropping, I could bat you for not taking your digi cam , or the very least having a mobile that takes pics.

What a treat that was for the weekend.
    Cheers

      Hi Stuart,

Youre absolutely right, I dont have a mobile that takes pictures, also the thing is more often than not I leave my digital camera in the glove box, of course it wasnt there when I needed it

It was very impressive though to see these 3 other helis just appear from nowhere.

      Cheers,

      Pete.

If I was ever going to take up scale I'd love to do a turbine gazzelle. I'd have save up some serious pennies though, plus no-doubt beg the wife

Youre not kidding, this is the stuff second mortgages are made of 8O

I would like a turbine at some point, whether its in a scale or just a pod and boom Im not sure, if TT brought out a turbine version of the raptor 90 then I would probably go for it.

The gazelle was very nice though, they obviously hover at a lower head speed than in forward flight as about 30 seconds before it climbed out I heard the pitch of the turbine increase and could also hear the head speed increase. They must hover at quite a low head speed as you could hear the thud the blades make.

          Cheers,

          Pete.
