  • Batteries!!

    Hi i want to join 2x 11.1v 2200mah to make a 6cell 22.2v 4400mah,

is it better to join them in parrallel or in series?

oh and why please so i can understand why!

    Thanks
    Cheers Aaron

If u join 2 of the batts that u quote in series u will have a 2200 mah 6 cell batterie. If u put the same two batts in parallel u will have a 4400mah batterie at 11.1 volts.

As Gaz said, if you join them in series, you'll get a 2200mAH 22.2v 6cell... Joining them in parallel, you'll get a 4400 11.1v 3cell...

Yes mate, but a dedicated 6 cell would be better. Also I think a slightly larger capacity would be better like a 2500mah size pack.

Thanks guys big help!!i would rather 2 seperate batteries as i will have more i can use with my 450,i know i will need a proper balance charger to help with charging them with the same mah.
              Cheers Aaron

As the guys have said you need to join them series to get the necessary voltage required, however the capacity of cells suitable for the 450 will mean you will have a slightly compromised pack for the 500 in that the size and therefore flight duration of your packs will be lower than ideal.

                  Series/Parallel

If you join 2 packs in parallel they will both end up at the same voltage. This is ok if they were the same volts before you joined them. If they aren't then one pack will charge the other and large currents can flow possibly melting connecting wires. Working out how much current flows from one to the other is not easy. Its best to avoid this until you know that the process is safe. Opinions differ. Some people think that even flat and fully charged batteries can be connected. But of course only the survivors will have an opinion.

If batteries are in series then the same current flows through each battery. So if two 2200mah batteries are in series and discharged for 1 hour at 2.2amps then both of them will be flat, so their capacity is still 2200mah.
If they are in parallel then the current comes from both of them, so 1.1amps comes from one and 1.1amps from the other. So each battery will only be half discharged after one hour. Their combined capacity is 4400mah.

You can think of them as jars full of water. In series you get one on top of the other so more water pressure or more volts.
In Paralle they are side so no more pressure, same volts, but more water,so more capacity.

You either get a better shower for the same time, or the same shower for twice as long.

A pair of 3s 2200s in series will run a 500 but the performance might be disappointing. It really depends on the quality and C rating of the batteries. If they are anything other than good, strong batteries then they will probably sag a bit under load. Sure, the heli will hover and do circuits for a while but when you punch the collective or require a bit more power then the packs will struggle to deliver.

So it may be okay for starters, but eventually you'll be wanting some dedicated 6s 2500-3000 packs with a C rating of 30 or more. TURNIGY NANO TECH batteries are getting a good write up at the moment and aren't expensive.
