  • End of an Era MHW

I don't know if many people buy the mag but I've done so since coming into the hobby about 2.5 years ago or so. One of the regular columns is 'Idling Up' written by Duncan O has come to an end. I'm not sure whether it's down to Dunc or the mag, I'll find out but I'm sad to see it go. I've had a subscription for about 18 months or so and always look forward to it dropping through the letterbox in order to add it to my ever growing little boys room reading material. I never get tired of going over this article in particular and like the way he has broken down manoeuvres in a way that I can sort of understand, my head but not my thumbs .

Anyway, his last article is an interview with Russ Deakin with Russ being the interviewer and Dunc the interviewee and it's absolutely superb. Very poignant and current, I'm a big old softy for people who have a God given talent but show humility, and Duncan is one of them. Difficult to get a conversation out of him sometimes but all too ready to come to the flightline with you to show you what your model is capable of, or to help with an issue.

There are some cracking photos and a real insight into the young man. One thing I never realised is he's always got bloody headphones in, I now know it's either for inspiration or to distract him from the competition, Duncan needing something to take his mind off it, he is human after all.

I for one will miss the regular column

You mean even when hes flying. I used to listen to music when Skateboarding to give me a little boost and help me focus. I did think about doing it while flying because I think its a major help with rhytm and timing etc.

Never knew Osbourne wrote for a mag though. I remember seeing him at 3D champs and was standing alone with his Dad while the results was being read out, personally I can ssee he likes to keep him self to him self and shows great diginity.

Having seen just 1 interview with him & his dad (which i can no longer find) & from pics i got that impression. I'd love to let him fly my logo

I deffo have to buy this months now for that interview. I 1st bought it when he won the 05 masters. The Idle up article has been great but it's gone full circle now. Funnily enough the 1st one i bought was 'piro flips' & the last one i have is again 'piro flips'

Nope it was Piro Loop, the previous was flip
Yes the big sigpic is coming back

3 Pages from the magazine that will leave a much bigger hole.

Hopefully not one that will be filled with adverts but instead hopefully a column thats as interesting and as good a read each month as Duncans that will run for as long.

SAD VERY SAD , sort of sums it up for me

I allways buy MHW and love Duncans articals and looked forwards to reading them very much , His unique blend of technical stick drawings and words made the chosen 3D move so easy to carry out in my dreams and thankfully translate some of the more basic ones in to reallity.

Being honest I thought the articals so mature I though Duncans dad may have written them but I guess anyone who looks about 15 and flys with such a smooth controled style is well capable of such articals.

Enough rambaling,................ only two words to say,

                  Thank You !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No definitely all Duncan, I've got a 2003 copy of MHW and the column was already in it so it definitely is the end of an era, he must have been 14 or 15 then. Articulate he is Rachel if you can get the conversation going, it's like pulling teeth sometimes. Wayne on the other hand takes some stopping so between them it sort of works. Ask a question and a series of 'well', 'umm', 'ooooh' never seen that before normally ensues from both at the same time.

It's definitely worth the bother of buying for the article alone, but then I am biased, I even had a bit of a lump in my throat reading it. Shhhhh! Don't tell anyone, I'm a rufty tufty Northerner with a rep to keep.

Come to the flyin Paddy and you only have to ask him, Laurence is coming so don't let him drive all the way up by himself

He's actually not shy, difficult to get talking maybe, if your into music you'll get a conversation.

I find it a bit amazing, remembering the first copy of MHW I picked up - Duncans article seemed like amazingly complex technospeak about blade grip friction, blade centre of gravity and phase lag. I re-read that same article recently and it all seemed fairly straightforward. Just goes to show how bad my heli addiction has become!

In my other life I wrote a monthy specialist mag article for 10 years. It really is a chore to keep it going over a long time...and it eventually the deadlines just mean stress and the fun is gone out of it.
So be sure to congratulate Duncan on his excellent work, but in the end I'm sure its a relief for him if they have found someone else to take over, or do something similar, with fresh enthusiasm.

                            Hi Dave.

I keep asking........... correction, joking with Duncan it's binary code he's listening to and he's flying to a preset program! Dit-dit-dit-dot

I'm still awaiting my new magazine, need to give Traplet a call as I seem to be getting them delivered later than I used to and so I have not read this article yet. He's decided to leave the magazine writing has he?
That's a shame, he's not been poached by RW has he

I've got a lot of time & respect for the Osbournes, they are a lovely family and Duncan is a great young man with a bright future ahead of him!
I wish him luck in any new venture he is taking.
