  • Tail wag -caused by warm to cold gyro?

Is it possible that taking a heli from indoors to outdoors could cause the tail to have a bit of wag? My concern is obviously geared toward the gyro initially. Should I leave the heli outside to aclimatise for a few minutes before connecting batteries and taking off? Have noticed this both on my 600 and 450.

Would be interested if it's this or if I need to look elsewhere as to what's causing the twitch.

If a gyro goes straight from a warm house or car and you use it immediately then it will be affected. It's best to leave the heli for at least 10 minutes to aclimatise before flying.
I generaly get my heli out first and then all the other gear which gives it some standing time before flying.
To be sure, take your heli out again and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes and then fly, if the tail wag is still there then you have at least eliminated temperature as a cause

depends on manufacture, some are more sensitive than other for temperature change

Had to take 5% off my gyro over winter even after 15mins cool down in the field. Think the Pad gets stiffer with the cold.

Thanks for the replies all. I've been flying in my back garden (just hovering actually) so been pretty much been going from warm to cold, then in the air within a couple of minutes.

My 600 has a spartan 760 if that helps. My 450 runs a cheapy telebee gyro (heli came from the states) and to be honest I probably need to change the tail belt anyway which could be contributing.

I'll try a 5% reduction and see if that helps.

The GP750 on my T600 is sensative to cold and may take a few attempts to initialise properly in this weather. If it's not right I get a tail drift and have to land power down and re-start which is a PITA but once it up and running correctly it's fine.

However the GP750 on my T500 seems completely unaffected.

Both gyros are mounted using the same pads and in the standard locations on both helis..

Just one of those little quirks that you get sometimes.

The Spartan "should" be ok as they are supposed to be individually temperature calibrated.

You've not got an already tight tail control rod links that will contract even further in the cold, leading to a bit of binding?

Was out the other day when it was cold, and my 600 was sittiing there for some time whilst we were cooking lunch. When i went for another flight, there was a lot of vibes on the spool up. Unusual. It was caused by the metal blade holders having a slightly tighter grip on the blades!! Once I'd loosened the bolts a bit it was fine!!!

You don't need to thread lock blade bolts on a 600. They are nylock.
