Try to get a reel of leaded solder (also known as 60/40) as it melts at a lower temperature than the newer lead free types and if you can find a tin of soldering flux paste, (usually available from old fashioned hardware shops) that will help make the solder to flow easier. I use only a Weller 50W temperature controlled iron and it never struggles with the normal 8 swg wires., I also have a Solderpro 50 gas soldering iron kit that I bought from Maplins (N12AR at £34.99 - wait for the sales if you can) but you need to be very careful with gas irons, as it is more difficult to control the heat output than a normal electric soldering iron and the heat also comes out of the sides of the barrel, so you may end up melting something you didn't want to!!

It also comes with a very useful hot air blower adaptor which is great for heatshrinking or generally warming things up.

I use the same iron and it's managed all my Turnigy 6S 5000 packs with the ridiculously sized 10AWG cables. As mentioned above, the secret is to make sure you use good old-fashioned lead solder, not the poxy lead-free which is common now. The lead multi-core solder melts at a lower temperature and flows better - there's lots for sale on Ebay.
