  • Gyro swensitivity too low?

    Hi Folks

Took my Raptor 50 Titan (GY401/9254) out last weekend for its first wring-out this past weekend. All previous flights have just been hovering.

I noticed two things. First, when hovering and putting sudden full collective, the tail would rotate through about 30 degrees before the gyro would catch it and return it to its origional heading. Also, I tried some backwards flight and, just as the speed crept up, I think the gyro 'lost' the tail and it swung around.

Newbie question: As I'm using the standard tail blades, could it just be that my gyro sensitivity is too low?

    Thanks
    Andrew

    Hi Phil,

If the 401 is setup correctly it shouldn't blow out that easy. Are your limits on the servo set correctly? Are you using the 9254? What gain are you using? Should be between 50-60%. Really important to get the limits set correctly or the gyro can't control correctly

      Hi Matt

I think its set up correctly. I've got equal rudder authority in each direction and there is no binding on the 9254. Throws are set to 100% on the rudder and the gyro limit is left as per factory setting.

My gain is set to +35 on my JR set. As you probably know, unlike Futaba, JR has a 0 position for zero gain, and the gain for each mode is set by entering positive values for HH, and negative values for non HH.

I suppose the only way to test it is to set the gain high enough so that the tail is just *not* wagging in a hover, and then try again?

      Cheers

What JR radio set and what channel have you asigned for your Gyro gain?

When the tail limit is set you should apply full right rudder and check the the travel on the pitch slider is nearly touching the end point and same for the left. I adjust it so it just starts to make the servo wine and then back it of. All on the limit pot of course.

          Hi Matt

Gyro on Gear Channel of my 378. Its easier to use and setup this way.

The checked the movement of the rudder and there is no binding, as you've described. So I think thats all set up correctly.

It's as though as you said originally then. If your running at +35 and the gear switich is up, should mean you are running at 35% in heading hold mode. Try upping to about 55%. Should sort it out.

Wow, that much? Thats about two thirds more than what I've currently got. I'll try it out next time I'm at the field.

I've never paid much attention to the gyro sensitivity setting, as my first guess of 35 seemed to work well for hovering only.

Thanks a ton for the help, by the way.

No worries. Between about 50% and 60%. The actual rule is adjust up until it starts to wag when you jab the tail then back it off but I found about 50% to 60% works well.

                Cheers

just doing the math for the setting I have on my 401/trex, I have 82% where 50% is no gain, so that would be 100-36=64% on a JR tx.
