  • Align starter question : how easy it is to lock it ?

    Hi all,
like many I'm using Align starter for my 700N and Raptor 90 3d for more than one year with no problems at all.

Now, wouple of w.ends ago while starting up my Raptor 90 (Align 91H engine) it seemed the starter was not able to start the engine (no hydrolock!) and I had some slight smoke coming out from under the start button.

At hoe, I've unmounted the starter and everything appears really ok, no smoke or burns signs. Remounted everything.
The starter it's still working anyway, but I have a question for you all that will hopefully let me understand if it's the case to change the started PCB or not (in other words if the starter has suffered or not).

Question is : if you grip with your hand the starter largest rotating part (where we screw in the hex 6 extension, how easy it is to send the starter in protection mode (all LEDs blinking and power cut to the motor) ?

In my case, it's quite easy to let it stop gripping not so hardly in that point with the hand, but I never paid attention at it before the smoke...

Battery is still fine of course.

I would only need some your experiences about how your started behaves while gripping it .. and I will surely understand if it's the case to find and change the internal Align starter PCB

Thank you so much in advance!

    All the best

    hi denis,
i have had my starter for about 2 years and had no problems with it,
if i hold the starter shaft adapter and spin it up it will spin and it doesnt matter how tight i hold it, even with a strong gripp on it it will still spin
    hope this helps
    cheers

Ok, so maybe it's my PCB that after that smoke it's maybe damaged and it makes the starter lock so easily.

Or maybe the 3s1p battery, but I've tried the same test with another 3s1p (not new) battery and the result is the same : quite easy to lock gripping by hand...

      Thank you again,
      Denis

I had the same thing happen to mine, twice. Bob J at Skyline replaced my first starter with a brand new unit, despite it being nearly a year old, then that one died within a couple of weeks. Sent it back and he fitted a new PCB (theses weren't available when the first one packed up). It's been fine for the four or five months since.

Ok, so I'm surely gonna change the PCB asap,
          Thank you,

Yes, I think it's the PCB indeed.
Waiting a new one this week from FastLad, as soon I'll receive I'll change it and I will hopefully solve
              Regards

Mine did the same - I had it swapped with a new unit (by Raj at align-trex) but I haven't used it much since.

Mine started smoking and got very hot, and like yours had very little power to the shaft and was easily stopped.
