  • My 1st Forced Auto

Well today turned out not only to be blurdey cold but also rather eventful with me having to perform my first ever forced auto.
While flying my N9 today I noticed that the engine note had changed it's tone so landed to richen up the main jet a couple of click's, took back off and gained height to around 40ft or so ready to do some flips, as I was just about to begin the engine became very raspy and then it stopped.
I managed to spin it round 180deg's and perform the perfect auto

It turns out that the main jet inlet where the fuel enters the carb had come unscrewed and was hanging off

MOTO, It may seem like a daft idea practising auto's and turning off a perfectly good engine but it will prepare you for the inevetable so get out there and practice those auto's, you just know your gonna need to do one some day.

I've got a YS in the Srimok. I am on something like my 5th forced auto now, including one out of an inverted hover at about 30ft.
Life's a bitch and then you fly!!

Strange coincidence but the same thing happened to me on my os91 equipped srimok. Main needle came completely out (could not find it). Does anyone know if this issue could be related to different expansion rates of the materials when cold?

Glad you got it down safely.

Have now checked the needles on my other engines........

          Thanks Tony,

I've been practicing them all year Tony but I must admit the first few were real hard work having to push myself into flicking that hold switch, Well chuffed that I did now though mate

Gav I wondered the same mate, I've been flying that bird for sometime now with no issues so I too was a little suprised to have the engine cut for that reason. Maybe temp does have something to do with it?

I've been pushing myself for a while now with making myself do at least one every flying day but recently the strange thing is I haven't been doing any, probably a least a couple or three weeks now.
Me thinks it time to get back and force myself some more

As you say Tim nice to finish with a great big auto, I'll see to see about that

If it wasnt for my exhaust nipple popping out and forcing me to do an autorotation i would still be scared to flick TH

Not today my friend, I live about 0.25 of a mile from my field and doubt very much I could get up the hill to it even if I wanted too

We had around 12" of snow here last night and NO GRIT or SALT on the roads
