The point I'm trying to make, and perhaps failing, is that there are many "armchair experts" out there that pass judgement on the decisions of others that may be far more experienced to make such decisions.

I stand by my views - if the airport or airline operators decide to close an airport or ground an aircraft, perhaps it's best we concur with their decision.
    No problem.

I have no problem with decision, I'd do the same, but I have really huge problem with what caused this decision. There are proven and known ways to keep airports operating in (light snow/ice) conditions, the problem is that Heathrow operators (following our government tactics) deny existence of winter and snow.

    • I can't argue with you there. Alas, as with many things in this life, I guess it all comes down to money.

Were the airport operators, Highways Agency etc to spend the money to buy the latest and greatest technologies to keep the runways and roads clear, I guess it'd be down to us punters to ultimately pick up the costs.

The question is, perhaps, what would those costs be and would we be prepared to pay it?

Well, obviously money is the problem, but I'll refrain from commenting too close to politics and I want to relax today.
How many billions from our taxes government gave away to their fat cat buddies from the City last year?

          • I heard that certain travellers around my area were actually stealing grit from the roadside containers until someone caught them... They sped off without a word!!! No wonder the council doesn't like to invest in grit lol...

              • Well the snow came down yesterday evening and it came down good. I live in a dead-end suburban road, on a hill and the way in and out of our road is, yes you guessed it, at the top of the hill. I made a vague attempt to drive the car up the hill earlier today and gave up after much sliding and skidding. It's compacted and freezing now so I won't be going to work tomorrow - was supposed to go to West London to do some interviewing of potential new employees. Ho hum.
