  • Deans type melted!!

Hi, something very scary happend earlier. I went to connect my 12's lipo setup to my ESC and there was one almighty spark/bang and a huge puff of black smoke! The whole Deans type connector disintergrated! Do you think it could of been a dodgy deans type connector which caused this? and would it of damaged my ESC or the lipo's?

I gather its the cheap copies? You do hear of the problems so stick with original ones.. or in loads of others peoples case.. go EC5's! Sorry not sure about the safety of the Lipo after that as its never happened to me before.. hope it hasn't though

Sounds like a full on short. Are you sure it was all wired up correctly?

Wouldn't put Deans on a 12s. I hope you find the cause.
        Cheers,

Yes, Im not going to use them to connect the two 6's lipo's to the esc. Going to use bullet connectors for that but I will Still be use them on the lipo's.

Had that happen to me on 10s with genuine deans!
Changed over to 5mm bullets and antispark,,,,no more hassles since,

Good alternative's are XT60 plugs- good for up to 80amps,

I use Emcotec 6mm hard gold plated bullets on all my 6S packs (2x 6S in series for 12 S of course).

              These are the daddy!

Rob, so you put heat shrink over them.

The thing I like with the 4mm bullets is the shroud but I see a 4mm bullet without the shroud come off this weekend just gone.

So contemplating changing over but I have 17 packs, the charge leads and all esc's to swap over plus the y harness that I use so going them 6mm ones you use ain't gonna be cheap

Need to look at others but one good thing is using a y harness and plugging the esc in first I never get a spark

Sorry to go off but yea, would not use deans myself on 12s

I've changed to 6mm bullets as well for 12S, you just can't beat bullets for this type of thing.

Just did a quick approximate calculation for you to swap over to Emcotec 6mm................£280-£300.............yikes............. think i'd stick to 4mm and buy another flight pack and a half instead

                      Lmao, sticking with 4mm then.

£300 will get me more than that. Nano techs 5000's are $85

With a good 6 cell there is a healthy pop when a Deans is connected but it's fine, with 12 cells....... that might be a bit more like a welding arc if you fumble it a bit while connecting which could cause a meltdown and short

Deans are only rated to 60amp so it looks like you'll need one rated at 120amp or over.

wooowww, bet that scared the crap out of you! Your lipos should be fine mate, don't worry on that. Just a quick voltage check would'nt go a miss to help restore your peace of mind. To check the ESC and if it was me, I would try connecting up an old lipo / power supply to the ESC, with minimal voltage requirments and see if the ESC is still operating correctly i.e.BEC is working if applicable. Then connect ESC to the receiver again and check everything is fine thereafter. Good luck mate
