  • Pro-Peak Supernova won't charge Nimh

Don't no if anybody has same problem but my Supernova does not discharge or charge Nimh packs properly.

If i discharge a 2300 mah pack at one amp in manual mode it only says the pack is 600 mah......then charges it to about 750- mah. This is a new Tornado pack from Overlander......if i increase the dis/charge rate to 2 amps th Suprnova puts in even less

I've also noticed this on my other older pack

    Any ideas.....

    Thanks

Cant really help with your charger, but I seem to get the same sort of probs with my Constellation charger, if I charge my battery at a set rate it hardly puts anything into the battery.
If I put it onto the automatic mode, it takes forever but puts more into it, but still not a full charge as if I reconnect the battery after its just finished and charge it again (still on auto) it easily puts a good few hundred Mah's into the battery, and can keep doing that for a good few more times etc.

does it on the battery for my Tx too, as thought it may be to do with the battery in the heli, but not sure!

are you connecting direct to the pack?
not via a switch or loom of any kind, as this will effect the "peak detect" of the charger.
also good quality leads and connections make a difference.

do you have a clubmate that can cycle your pack on another charger,
i have seen "NEW" packs before that are u\s.

        just a couple of thoughts...

yes .....removed pack from transmitter......charging leads are not the best.....i'll make up new ones.......does the charger monitor the internal resistance of the pack and therfore dodgy leads increase resistance ?????????

I nomally solder 4mm gold connectors onto a Futaba lead/plug from an old servo......but is the wire is small to take 3 amps ?????

the charger is looking for a "peak" in the voltage of the pack but with ni-mh its not as easy to detect as a ni-cd.

            extra connections might upset it.

servo wires are NOT good for 3 amps

make some proper connectors up, most new high capacity flight packs come with a dedicated charge lead capable of taking at least 1C (3.3amps on a 3300 mah pack)
if i was using a new pack i would want at least one cycle were the pack gave up its full capacity(well almost)

just re- read your second post. transmitter packs are AA cells and although they have a capacity of 2300 mah they will not like being charged @1Cthey need a much lower charge rate due to internal resistance try 0.4 amp even thats quite high for those cells.

i see your in harold wood, where do you fly?
get a club member to charge cycle it as you may have a faulty charger
(had a supa nova for about 4 yrs trouble free, still use it)
DONT use that pack until you can prove its capacity

              Thanks,

I have proved the new battery pack and i have also tried the Supernova on another nimh pack i've have had for over a year... but i don't use the Supernova to charge it 'cos it doesn't seem to work properly as described above.

I fly with West Essex Aeromodlers at Bulphan, Essex.......Great club and great members

I don't use the Supernova for nimh 'cos i don't have confidence in it.....think i'll upgrade the charger as posted before
