  • Wobbly knees....What's that all about ????

OK, Ive Just come back after a quick flying session with my Trex 450, and I'm glad to say it was a good one. No crashes, just good fun

    Except....
Why is it, that despite the fact that I feel 100% confident in what I'm doing, and I don't even in the slightest bit feel nervous about the manoeuvres I'm doing (Flips, ff rolls, stall turns and nose in inverted etc) Or indeed my ability to do them. 2 minuets into the flight my knees start shaking But WHY Its as if they have got a mind of their own and Its really distracting
The problem isn't in my head. As I said, I feel totally confident about what I'm doing. Is this some sort of natural reflex You know, Like blinking if something shoots past your eyes????

Should I start taking a bottle of whisky to the flying site and have a good slug before lift off

Don't hit the whisky, just take a Black & Decker Benchmate and clamp your legs in that before take off

It's amazing the confidence you get in a bottle, But i can't recommend it to anyone.

But on a real note, I would say start to worry if your knees stop shaking, thats when you get over confident and a crash is on the way.

I think it's probably just natural...doing that sort of flying, no matter how comfortable you are with it, will get the adrenaline flowing (if it doesn't there's something seriously wrong with you!) and it's probably just a bi-product of this.

I still remember real old wobbly knee syndrome (WKS?) from my first controlled hovers. That went after about my 4th hover when it seemed to just "click" but I had a moment on probably my 10th flight where I lost orientation for about 3 or 4 seconds, and the WKS came back with a vengance

You may think you feel confident enough... but in reality you are probably not 100%.

Just keep at it, and I think it will pass.

I'm pretty confident myself and don't get the trembling knees.. but get a nice crowd behind me watching me.. and that's when mine start

Wobbly knees just means you alive and need more practice or that the heli needs some tweaking to give added confidense for what you used to and prefer. Shaky fingers means you just pushed very close to your abilities. Magic happens when you able to push shaky fingers to wobbly knees hehe.

Don't worry when your brain feels comfortable the knees come to a dead calm

              Thanks Guys,

Yeah, your probably right, in that my conscious half is saying I'm fine
While my subconscious half is saying WTF are you doing Lol

It is really distracting though, cos I want to push myself a bit further, but feel my knees are holding me back

Will just have to keep on practising I suppose.

Btw, I was joking about the whisky

              I prefer vodka personally

What a strange syndrom do you descripe here?
I thought it's only a phenomenon of german helipilots.
But it seems the effect has jumped over the channel.

I found I had no problem with nerves when they put me on beta-blockers, could care less about crashing, then they changed my tablets and couldn't believe the butterflies in the stomach next time out.
